I've been tracking with my 4003 for the past week and I've gotta say it's been really awesome so far. I love the thing as it is, but I don't want to come off as a fanboy. It's a great bass, but I wouldn't consider it an all arounder at all. It's a Rickenbacker and it sounds only like a Rickenbacker. Which isn't a bad thing by the way.

I use my modded 69' Fender P/J and my 06' Fender Jaguar, both with flats, and have had great feedback from producers and artists. I also have a Hofner 500/1 and a 71' Ibanez EB3 for different tones.
I find that flats really help to level out the dynamics so little to no compression is needed.
Any decent quality bass will be suitable for recording provided that the electronics are quiet and the intonation is prefect. Good technique goes a long way too.
