Mott the Hoople's cover of Bowie's All the Young Dudes.

I think Bowie wrote and produced this for Mott the Hoople (although he sang backing vocals) but didn't record and perform it himself until later.

So he ended up singing a cover of his own song!

What a great tune!

Also, Talas' version of Stop! In the Name of Love from their first album...Billy's bass tone is monstrous!

Robert Johnson must be spinning like a lathe ever since they re-did his minimal blues song in the 60's, but it's one of the greatest "covers" ever done.

I'm not huge on covers, but Foo Fighters did a good cover of Baker Street that I like.
Failure and Lacuna Coil have both done good covers of Enjoy the Silence.
My thing is that most covers are of pop songs and I generally disdain pop songs.

Pat Travers covering Booker T/Albert King "Born Under a Bad Sign". This one has a nice pace, great vocal track, builds all the way through, and has Peter "Mars" Cowling (RIP) on it.


Arguably, two of the most successful covers would be Clapton's versions of J.J. Cale's "Cocaine" and Bob Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff". Talk about sales and airplay! (Oddly, I still prefer the originals.)
