Love Hurts is an interesting song. Everly's were first to record it, then Orbison. There are a lot of versions of this song recorded, but Gram Parsons and Emmylou took it more country (and added cool bass part). Then of course Nazareth with power chords and bluesy gutsy solo singing.

Despite Nazareth's popularity, any of these other versions are brilliant on their own. I know there are other songs covered a lot, but the evolution of the song is impressive.







Another cover that blew me away when I heard it was Stevie Wonder's version of « We Can Work It Out » which ends up being a social statement on top of a love song.

Chet Baker covering Skylark by Hoagie Carmichael. If I'd read this post a year ago I'd have said something like Knock on Wood by Seal or whatever other great rock and soul covers have been done. Then I started playing in a jazz combo and a whole other world of music opened up....................... (still like the rockers though!)

We hated this the 1st time we saw/heard them on SNL. (I'm old) 'Twas absolute BLASPHEMY!
It took me some time to recognize just how brilliant Devo were.

Not a Five Finger Death Punch fan, but their cover of "Blue on Black" with Brian May, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Brantley Gilbert is up there on my list right now as far as covers I'm currently listening too. They added just enough of a rock edge to it. Very well done I think.


Godsmack doing "Come Together" is another one that pushes the song's edge out a little further, and that bass...


And then who couldn't like this? Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Dhani Harrison and Prince, live, "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Prince absolutely shreds it.


Speaking of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", just discovered this Frampton cover of it a few weeks ago. Don't know how I missed it until now over the 53 years I've been on this earth.


And I can't leave out Rush, Geddy Lee plays John Entwistle, The Who's "The Seeker"


I guess I'll stop there... Oops, nope one more, Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush jammin' on some Muddy Waters 'ala Hendrix style. "I'm a King Bee Baby / Back Door Man" I actually heard this for the first time, live, late 70s at the Von Braun Civic Center when he opened for Aerosmith on the "Toys In The Attic" tour. And it's the song that influenced me to start looking at blues riffs on bass. "Been tried for murder, in the first degree. The judge's wife said let the man go free..."

While we're on to Emmylou, her version of Chuck Berry's "C'est La Vie (You Never Can Tell)" with the Hot Band is dynamite. Take close note of the *great* bass playing by Emery Gordy Jr.

Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" has now been covered by a huge range of artists. While K.D. Lang's cover has a very special place, for me I think that Jeff Buckley's flawed, vulnerable version is just beautiful.

Sugar's cover of the who's "armenia city in the sky." It's just incendiary. I wish there was video. The audio is on youtube though.

Bob Mould always had an ear for unexpected cover songs, like when Husker Du did the Byrds' "eight miles high".
