I'm guessing he doesn't care much what some loser in Iowa thinks... I will say, I used to get fairly close to that sound with an old DOD octave pedal and probably some other stuff on it.

Probably not. George screwed him out of all his song writing and royalties credits. So, he's got bigger worries. There is a really cool documentary about him on Netflix. It's called "Stranger: Bernie Worrell on Earth." Quite a bit of insight on a modern day genius.
"Seven Nation Army" is all guitar, but the bass line is done with a Whammy Pedal. Does that count?
I play in a Car's tribute and Ben Orr used the Octave-down in a lot of their songs - "Moving In Stereo" and "Night spots" are just two of my favorites.

I don't think it's a quality issue at all. I l think that the OC2 is very VERY sensitive to the rest of your setup, your playing style, dynamics, etc. You almost have to learn it as if you're learning an instrument. It requires a lot of patience at first, but it has been worth it for sure! IMO of course!
Nope. Same setup, different OC2s, different results. This is a pretty well documented phenomenon.
I've heard of the SLIGHT difference between the tracking of the Taiwan and Japan versions (if that's what you're referring to), but after using many OC2s, I've never heard a drastic difference or read/seen evidence of this phenomenon of quality variance across the board. I'm not saying I don't believe you, I've just never had this problem myself and definitely would not tell someone interested in an OC2 that they weren't "worth it" because on the negligible difference between the MIJ/Taiwan models.

Not an MIJ/MIT issue, although I've heard that the two of them sound slightly different. I don't have any idea as to where the ones I've tried were built, but suffice it to say I tried seven of them (yes, SEVEN) in the span of a week with the same two basses. I was on a conquest for a new octave pedal and after hearing that it was the standard, classic, best, etc. I bought one. It tracked terribly, but sounded awesome. I ditched it and found a few more in local shops, one on Craigslist, and one owned by a guitarist buddy of mine. Only the one owned by my buddy tracked well at all. They all sounded awesome when they could find the note, big the tracking just killed me. He didn't want to sell, so I did some digging and found this issue reported on a lot of forums by bassists and guitarists alike. Bad tracking is a deal breaker for me, so I went a different direction and have never looked back.
