What I’m talking about here is the work of someone brought in to enhance/embellish the song of an artist/band that doesn’t always employ such a sonic device. That means ELO doesn’t count. Also, for example, while I’ve always loved Nelson Riddle’s Route 66 theme, that was recorded by him as his own entity, the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, so something like that would not qualify, but what he did for Sinatra and Linda Ronstadt would. It doesn’t have to be strictly strings, horns/woodwinds could be part of the mix, but pure horn arrangements/sections should have their own thread. It doesn’t have to be a large string section, either; trios and quartets count. “Eleanor Rigby” or “Yesterday” would be the Captain Obvious examples, so those are off the table...I hope to learn about examples needing more recognition. If you know the composer/arranger, mention them if you can, but it’s not required. So, my own choices would be these...
Harry Robertson’s layers wrap that song like a blanket. Then, two from Scott Walker, from two entirely different eras...
Lastly, Jimmy Haskell’s strings made an unsettling song even creepier...
Whatchu got?
