I think there's been some pretty cool TV theme songs over the years. There's usually a longer or full version that's worth checking out.

I posted Night Court as an obvious answer but I actually think Hill Street Blues had the best theme song. That was one of the first modern cop dramas that dealt with incongruities in characters and their behavior (the good guys did bad things sometimes and the bad guys were easy to root for).

The theme itself is sad and introspective, which was a new thing for a cop drama in the 80s.

The upbeat version over opening credits of Red Dwarf is an excellent guitar-wailing bit of fun.

I also have a soft spot for the end credits theme tune from Only Fools and Horses.

Hawaii 5-0 was a good one that one of my bands played with guitar synth. Hard to narrow it down as there have been many good themes.
