Culture was (and maybe still is, I don't know) a great vocal group, and their backup band was smokin.' If you like it traditional and rootsy, check them out!

Joseph Hill (the leader of Culture) died a few years ago, but his son now leads the band and they still sound really good.

NICE list!! Just the outtakes I quoted bring back great memories for me- especially Lt. Stitchie - *deep* pull man! I got a Stitchie cassette tape in JA back in the late 80's and saw him at Sunsplash in '90 (or was it 89? I'm having trouble remembering it, haw haw). That year Tiger and Shabba Ranks where the big artists, but I also loved seeing both Judy Mowatt's and Marcia Griffiths' bands on "Classic" night.

I might add the entire Toots and Maytals album "Funky Kingston", the whole thing is great, but key on the title track and "Time Tough", plus the classic cover of John Denver's "Country Roads", wherein Toots demonstrates that he has no idea what the Shenandoah river is, but it doesn't matter: "Shining down your river" indeed!

Oh and Steel Pulse's album "Handsworth Revolution" - "True Democracy" is great too, I even like "Earth Crisis", but IMHO Handsworth is their masterwork (their first release, too).

I LOVE the "Radiodread" album from EZ Star All Stars. My favorite of their albums. The vinyl has four bonus "dub" tracks that are all fantastic.
