I notice in alot of the tunes, if not all, there are no solos.

Listening to these songs is giving me notions of starting a reggae band, but I dont know how easy it would be to attract a guitarist who is just basically 'skanking' all the time. Would adding a few solos be wrong?

Man, finding good reggae players can be really difficult! It's not just the guitarist - it's everything. Just finding guys who know the style and have the vocabulary (and know what NOT to play as well as what to play) can be a real chore. Having said that, there's nothing wrong with having solos in reggae. Listen to live Marley and Steel Pulse (amongst others) and you'll hear solos. Keep in mind, too, that reggae is derived from ska (via rocksteady) and ska was very much a solo-oriented style (just check out some Skatalites).

Go have a listen to `Real Rock` by Sound Dimension, follwed by pretty much anything by Jackie Mittoo and you'll hear some examples of solos in reggae.

I'll also suggest that you check out some Ernest Ranglin (try the album Below The Bassline) and a group called Jazz Jamaica.

Adding solos are great and should be encouraged. The trick is when to do it and in what songs...Not every reggae song calls for a solo..we have a friend that joins us form time to time when he's not on the road..we "Heathen" by Bob and he rips it up. But you won't hear a solo on "Night Nurse" even tho he could do it..just won't sond right...

Wow, cool that this thread is still alive.

Since my original post in which I sang the praises of Sly & Robbie (no retraction), I have found myself listening to a greatest hits compilation by Culture quite a bit. Man, this is some heavy shirt for the fan of roots reggae. "Peace & Love," "Capture Rasta," "Soon Come," "Old Tattoo"... my friends, this is about as deep as it gets. There are no credits on this bootleg compilation I'm listening to, so I have no idea who's laying down the bass. But it is APOCALYPTIC. Plus the songs are just really tuneful and rebellious and groovy. Culture was (and maybe still is, I don't know) a great vocal group, and their backup band was smokin.' If you like it traditional and rootsy, check them out!
