Your fee for subbing

Last Summer I subbed 8-10 times with a local band. (I'm also a permanent member of another local band.) They don't make much on gigs, typically $75-150 per member, per gig. I attended a couple of rehearsals before the first gig for free and got paid $100 per gig. This year I asked for a "raise" and was gladly bumped up to $125 per gig. Thing is, I don't know what the "going pay" is for subbing. I'd like to hear from other TB members who sub.

I usually take an equal share.

I make an exception if it's a one-off and rehearsal or long travel is involved.

I live about 30 miles outside of Boston so if someone wants me to drive to the city for a rehearsal, that's two gallons of gas and tolls both ways. The IRS tells me I can deduct $39 just for the miles and add in the tolls for about $50 in all. If it's a $100 gig and I have to one rehearsal, I'm only breaking even. Two rehearsals, well I just donated $50 to the fight for good music

If the gig itself is going to be more than 30 miles away and I can't car pool at least part of the way I want to be compensated for IRS mileage. I was asked recently to do a gig in Albany, NY...280 miles round trip. That's $183 IRS mileage plus tolls. I was only guaranteed $150 and would need $300 to drive that far unless it was doing a favor for a good friend (which I've done for gas money).

Depends on the gig. If it's a wedding reception, You better not try to pay me $100. But generally, no less than $100. Again, depending on the gig. I don't do bar gigs.

I voted same share as permanent members, but I don’t object if the BL gets a little more for the PA or booking fee.

I've always taken an equal split from the rest of the band.

All the bands that I sub for, we all know each other, so it's an equal split.

I’ve never subbed for another group but any time we needed a last minute sub for our band I made sure they got paid even more than we did. Equal pay would be a minimum.
