Your G&L history?

I started playing in the mid 80's and had a late 70's Thunderbird which was awkward. I traded it in with a some cash for an '81 L-2000E. I stopped playing in the early 90's and traded the GnL to a plumber for a washer-dryer hookup. (I was newly married)

Took up bass again 2 years ago with a shortscale Danelectro and hunted down the plumber and repurchased the L2KE which now needed a fret job and more.

I added an '83 SB-2, an '81 L-1000 hog player, and an '86 SB-1. I also have a '89 MIJ P-Bass which now sports an MFD and saddle-lock bridge.

I started on this hidious looking orange short scale Kay electric in '79.... oh, the memories. Kinda wish I still had it!

Played a Magnum p/j for a bit. Then an Ibanez P copy for several years. Then in '87, when I was stationed at Ft. Sill, OK I came across my baby! I was peering through a music store window on a Sunday trying to see what they had. I couldn't see a thing, and wished they were open so I could take a gander...... just then a car pull up behind me. It was the owner, who was passing by. He let me in, and explained he had just bought out another store, and had a ton of stuff laying around on the floor. And there it was!... my first G&L.... an '87 SB1. White, with the black crinkle bridge and pickguard, and maple neck. 350 bucks brand new with the case. I still have it, and it's my primary player. She's mellowed and aged beautifully.

In the early '90's I picked up an early '80's L1000, but we didn't get along real well, so I ditched it. I went through a ton of other basses, but the SB1 really spoiled me. There is something about that 1 11/16" neck! The only other bass I kept is a '92 MIA Fender Jazz, that I also adore.

Last year I picked up a 2002 or 3 L2000 (1 3/4" width... forget which number it is), and an SB2 earlier this year. I like them both, but rarely play them. The SB1 remains my favorite...... it's kinda like an old baseball glove.... "broken in", familiar, with tons of my mojo all over it!

Way back in 1990 or so, my (eventual) wife & I didn't know anyone who played bass, so Beanie said, "I'll do it!" ... hmm .... so, I bought her a little Epiphone to try out. Try she did - for like 5 minutes: "OW! This hurts my fingers." Next thing I know, I'm the bass player ... and had NO idea how much I would take to it. In retrospect, I guess it was destiny - as I look back on my life, seems as though I've always gravitated to singing the bass lines for songs on the radio.

The Epi worked O.K. for a year, then I decided that I needed a "real" bass. Went to NYC and shopped 48th St - Manny's, Sam Ash, etc ... played every Fender P-Bass I found - hated them all. Baseball bat necks - yuck. Finally happened upon a G&L Legacy Bass (that's all it's called - no letters or numbers) in a little shop on Long Island, and fell in love. She's been my only since then, until I got the itch again and went looking for another P-Bass this year (got an 86-87 MIJ P a couple months ago).

I've owned over a hundred basses since taking up the habit in 1979. I did make a list of the ones that I remember (the '80's were a bit foggy at times),but I didn't get into G&L's until 2001, when I found a 2K with a busted truss rod for $395. I had the busted rod dug out of the neck- boy, don't EVER try to do that!-a new truss rod installed and a new fingerboard installed. I was playing Stingrays at the time, so in a fit of GAS-driven stupidity, I traded it off for a '74 Jazz Bass mutt-big mistake. Since then, the body count goes like this.
81 L1K, Nat ash/ ebony, chrome plate/ smooth black bridge- now with a friend
84 L2K, cream over maple/ rosewood. This is/ was the "Molly Hatchet" bass, having been owned by Bobby Ingram of the southern rock outfit, Molly Hatchet. The bass got Steinberger-ized-cut square:scowl:-, and is now being re-built using a mahogany body- still here
86 L2K, Nat ash/ rosewood, supposedly owned by Travis Tritt's bassist. Now with a friend
87 El Toro, trans blue over ash, rosewood, matching headstock- now with a friend
96 L2K, sunburst over ash, maple- gone to Hawaii
96 L2K black swirl, un-lined ebony board, probably the only one G&L ever built- still here
97 L2K, honeyburst over ash, rosewood board- absolutely the best G&L I've ever owned, and one of my three all-time best basses- and not goin' anywhere!
03 L2k Trib, black/ maple- gone

....the GAS has slacked off for a while, at least until I get the resto done on the 84, but I did get a call from my local music store telling me about a great trans blue ASAT that just came in on trade....

Mine is considerably shorter.

Sometime in the late '70's a Peavey of some sort--I think. Gone since '82.

2007 added a Brice Beatle bass--still have it, reluctantly up for sale.
2007 added a Washburn XB102--still own it, but it's at a consignment shop right now.
2007 added a Fullerton Ventura five--gone, traded in for the Tribute mentioned below
2008 added an SX short-scale--still have it.
2008 added a Tribute G&L Tribute L2000-- going nowhere.
2008 added a TBC AP500M--it's a keeper too.

Turns out I was wrong about my Trib L2k going nowhere. Sold the SX and the Trib L2k so I could order a Trib L2.5k. Should arrive next week.

Early 90's:
Samick 5 (hi-end model purchased while stationed in Korea)
'78 Fender P
ASAT (blue swirl with maple neck and NAMM written in the neck pocket. Oh, why'd I let it go?)

Late 90's:
Custom SB-1 (t-burst, turtle guard, gunstock finish maple jazz neck)

SB-1 is all I have left. Gift from my wife. Keeping them both.

USA SB-2, bought for $500 off Ebay about four years ago. Still my only bass. Couldn't believe how loud and big it sounds.

Got the Trib L2.5k and love it. Adjusted to the wide neck more easily that expected and am really enjoying the bass.

Want to get some flats on it, but that will be a project for later. Down to two basses and happy with both. Never expected to be a five-string player. Life is full of surprises.

Started with an Ovation bass in the late 80s.
Moved to a Ric in the early 90s. Sadly, sold the Ric for a price that I don't dare type for fear of a rightly deserved gang tackle. On the upside, it was to a buddy who gave it a good home.
Didn't play for a decade.
Bought a Squire a couple years ago to get my chops back. Quickly began to hate it. You can't go back to a kid's bass after owning a pro bass.
Bought an SB-2 that I don't ever plan to sell. Oh, the growl. Oh, the craftsmanship. Go ahead, jump on stage, I'll decapitate you with my axe.
