That would have been awesome to see Verlander pitch a complete game, but I'm not going to disagree with Jim Leyland. :D

What a treat for baseball fans though. Deciding game fives on back to back nights, each featuring a stellar pitching performance.

Tigers no hit the Bosox for 8 1/3 and win with a one hit 17K shutout with four pitchers. Great game with no question the two best teams in the AL, perhaps baseball.
He
Sanchez pitched Six innings of No hit 12 SO ball w/6 BB. Not bad for your number three starter. He also struck out 4 in the first, first time since 1908. Scherzer goes tomorow against Bucholz. One factor in this series, While Boston led the AL in runs scored they also led the league in strikeouts. The Tigers pitching staff set the Major league record for strikeouts this year. While the BoSox are very good, they are going to be swinging at a lot of air this series.

Tough trail ahead for Boston. Down 1-0 and the two best pitchers for Detroit are due up the next two games.

My goodness though, did anyone see Rosenthal blow away the Dodgers today? Amazing.

-Mike

Yup a pair of very intense games yesterday. Pitching has been insane. I'm sure there will be a Verlander or Waino start with a score like 12-9, because funny things like that happen in the playoffs, but so far everyone's been dealing.

Man, so many scoring opportunities missed by the Dodgers the last couple games. I'd be furious if I was fan.

That was a great outing by sanchez and the relievers, but the sox beat a rays team with some strong pitching and I suspect that they will score a few runs off the tigers before this is over. Detroit only scored one run so if they get 3 more shutouts, i'll tip my cap and wish them well against the nl.

Yes, I look forward to watching either team lose to the Cards.

+1 That scene after the grand slam was too perfect. Torii flies over the wall, the bullpen catcher catches it and the security guard's pumping his fist.

He is actually a Boston police officer which makes it funnier. I understand that it has gone viral. The bullpen cop from the 2004 and 2007 playoffs who used to give Papelbon a fist bump when he went in the game (see picture below) must have retired, this is a different guy.

I liked Hunter's comments afterward about it - he was giving the cop a good-natured hard time. Hunter almost made the catch - it truly is a game of inches as hoary as that cliche is, there is a lot of truth in it.

Day baseball this afternoon - if there is sunshine, I think that helps the Sox - Verlander is pretty hard to hit even when you can see the ball so for at least the first few innings, Lackey's ball will be almost as hard to hit as Verlander's. If it is overcast, the advantage swings back to the Tigers.

I will also be watching to see if Verlander paces himself a bit so he goes deeper into the game to avoid turning it over to bullpen.

Sox pulled it out again! But that pitching staff for Detroit is dangerous. Sox still have their hands full for sure.

Seeing the best hitters up against the best pitchers is fun to watch even though the scores are low.

Dude, don't you know we Cards fans humblebrag and everyone hates us for it? That's not very humblebraggy of you there.

I'm cracking up at all these articles about hating on the Cardinals and their fans.

According to the WSJ, we're the least hateable team left in it, so that's cool.

Tigers-Red Sox is even. I still see this going 7 games. The Sox have to find a way to get some runs off of the Tiger starters - it is pretty obvious that they can score on the Tiger bullpen.

Good move by Leyland to shake up the lineup - sometimes something as simple as moving a guy down the lineup can be a spark and sometimes a change for the sake of change can put a team back on the right track.

I am really enjoying the BOS/DET series. The blowouts aren't all that fun to watch. Maybe a couple more 1-0 games.

-Mike

Its playoff baseball, all the games are fun to watch - just different flavors of agony. Is the 1-0 lead going to hold up? Will the 5 or 7 run lead after 5 or 6 innings hold up - with these two offenses that is not a sure thing.

I enjoy it when my team makes a comeback; less so when the opponent does. I suspect that most Detroit fans were as nervous as I was hopeful with Ortiz at the plate with men on in the 9th last night.

Tonight is a rematch of the Game 1 starters. I get the sense that both teams have found their hitting shoes and we'll see something closer to a 5-4; 4-3; 4-2 score tonight.
