Ruben Amaro Jr. (Phillies GM) had said he was looking beyond this season and wants to build for 2013, traded Hunter Pence (RF) to Giants and Shane Victorino (CF) to Dodgers... they may need more out of their relief pitching staff, but to potentially load up on what could be a rookie outfield may put them out of contention till at least 2015. Although team chemistry may also be important - Phils seem to lack motivation this year, or in the words of a loyal fan, they SUCK.

Tried to sell off Blanton (pitcher) to Orioles but too much money left on his current contract.

We like the game but forget that it is still a business that has to make money.

Victorino to the Dodgers - I'm liking this. Hopefully, he can be an effective lead-off guy. With the addition of Victorino and Hanley Ramirez, it seems the Dodgers are serious about building a solid, winning team. I'm hoping they can also pick up a top-level starter (Ryan Dempster's name has been circling the tower for weeks).

Dempster has the start for the rangers tonight against the angels. We will see how well he does with a team that can actually give him some run support. We also picked up giovanni soto from the cubs to catch for dempster to insure a smooth transition.

He's been phenomenal, that's for sure. I'm a long-time (and long-suffering) Pirate fan since growing up in the 1950s. I used to go to games at Forbes Field and watch Clemente, Mazeroski, Dick Groat, etc. play. I'll never forget when they beat the Yankees in the 1960 World Series on Mazeroski's series-winning, walk-off home run in the bottom of the 9th. Some great teams in the '70s too with Stargell, Parker, Candelaria, Tekulve, etc.

But I've also suffered through some miserable decades!! Good to see them playing well again, even if they don't win their Division. Big series against the Reds starts tonight...

I'll keep my eye in that series, it should be a good one. Reds are doing fairly well also.
