My favorite way to toneshape with with two different dirt preamps, or a dirt pedal and a dirt preamp.
A little dirt from each, and presto.
Oh, and maybe add an eq in front of them.
I’ve been mic’ing my amp’s cabinet for a few years now, and although I used to strictly D.I., I probably won’t be going back to that(although it’s definitely a way to record nicely as well)

I'm not afraid to twiddle those knobs. Typically I'll start with the controls on the bass flat and tweak the amp for different situations/basses, once I have what I want there I can make minor adjustments to bass/mid/treble on the bass.
On the Jazz Bass I'll roll the tone down roughly 1/3 for fingerstyle and max it for slap. It seems to be a balance between on-board preamp and bass amp tone controls for me.
For FOH I'll send the direct signal and let the sound engineer zone in on the tone, ultimately he is in control of the room sound.

Alright, I learned a huge wealth of information from this thread - again, thank you to everyone for your thoughts here. A lot of food for thought here!
I was afraid of layering it too much making it too complicated. Yes, I do have a habit of overthinking things =). I admit, I now wish my BG250 combo had an effects loop so I could start fiddling on that approach. I'm eyeing that WTDI.
Either way, there is no shortage of things for me to work on right now in terms of improving my bass playing. I am still in a beginner phase, so I've much to practice!
