Your take on how my Jazz will devalue

I recently acquired a 1992 Fender American Vintage Reissue '62 Jazz. Everything about it is near-perfect, except that a previous owner routed a battery lid opening on the back of the body. It's located appropriately under the middle of the wiring cavity. It has an actual Fender battery cover and the routing job is top notch/very professional; it could pass for factory.

The stock stacked control plate will be switched for a V/V/T plate in the very near future.

So my question is this: How degraded is the value of this bass? I don't really want to get into a conversation about dollar values, but more of a conversation in terms of % compared to what a flawless version would be worth.

Not too significantly, I'd wager. I wouldn't say more than 10-15%. Not to be snarky, but the current value of the bass is the price you paid for it, so you can do the math from there.

If someone wanted an active Fender, they might not see that as a de-valued bass. If you recoup your money, then the mod didn't damage the value.

Seriously, never do an irreversible mod on an instrument.

THIS! i wish the ******* before me didn't drill holes in my am standard for a ****ing ashtray, pu cover, and thumb rest . . . what a ****ing waste and now my beautiful bass has like 33 extra holes in it for no reason . . .

Today's value is fine. The mod will only detract down the road for someone looking for an unmolested version of what you have.

This. The original owner should have paid the price for the mod. I'm assuming you bought it for less than he/she did. If you like it, don't sweat it at all.

These responses are optimistic. I don't have any plans to get rid of the bass any time soon, but I did just want to get an idea of where it fits in.

Most looking for a '62 RI Jazz will prefer passive elecs, so IMO it's fairly heavily devalued by that mod. I would say it's worth about 70-80% of an otherwise identical example, tops.
