I think the string type and make will make the biggest impact vs one or other bass. Flats or ground-wounds, wind back the treble and you’ll be there!

Interesting how our opinions and experiences differ. My comments are about Jazz basses, so keep that in mind.

I owned a 2015 American Standard with CS pickups and still own a 2008 American Standard.

I also currently own an American Pro I and three American Pro IIs.

My two Standards are/were in the low 9s, the Pro I is 8.9 pounds, and all three Pro IIs are 8.5 pounds or less. So, the Standards aren't always lighter.

All of these basses are roughly equal in fit, finish and quality, but my Pro IIs are slightly better. And the Pro II necks, for me, are much better.

I own late AmStd, Pro I, Pro II and American Select Ps. I'm very much *not* a fan of the VMod I pickups in the Pro I, but I don't think you can miss with any of the others. The Select gets you lacquer finish and a quartersawn neck as well as fancy woods. Mine is a shade brighter than my other Ps. The AmStd is the most vintage-style of the lot, in sound and features. As much as I like those, I play my Pro II (sunburst/maple) more often for whatever reason. All three are very well-built, good sounding and satisfying basses to play, imo.

what are your thoughts on the custom shop pups of the standard vs the v mods on the pro II?

from what i've seen the price points are pretty similar...

I find the CS62 to be just ok, I know it gets a lot of love on Talkbass. It does a decent job, my guitar player likes both pickups. I find the CS62 to be sort of lacking in character.

The VMod II I’d planned to replace. I bought the bass used and it had older labella’s on it, so the low strings sounded kinda mushy. I bought a Nordstrand to replace it, but before it arrived I changed the strings, and it really came alive then. Lots of nice harmonics on the lower strings, good highs. I decided to keep it and have been playing it as my number 1 for three years.

I also have two Pro’s, and replaced the VMod in those. I’m happy with that choice too.

As far as timeless classic sounds I think either the VMod II or the CS62 will give you what you want, my preference is the VMod II.

I agree with all of this, but for P’s. I also owned a 2008.
