There have been a few threads here and in Recordings about modern music. They tend to become past-vs.-current slugfests (ultimately pointless, but a fun argument nontheless!), so I'm asking this: Who are your VERY favorite bands/artists that have emerged in the past 5 years, give or take a year or two? I don't mean the ones you think are pretty cool; I'm mean the ones that hit you in the chest, blow you away, knock you out, make you melt...well, you get the idea! I have no interest in comparing them to bands/artists of previous eras (that's been done to death). It can be any genre or style. I just want to know which current music acts really move you. And links are most welcome!

Cold War Kids. I heard of them when my old band wanted to cover "Hang Me Up to Dry," but none of us could sing it. Saw them in concert a couple weeks ago and they were fantastic! Three albums so far since 2005 or 2006, very good body of work in my opinion.

Also, from Germany, I'm pretty fond of Wir Sind Helden. Kind of poppy but a lot of creativity and variety and their albums show considerable growth, not just sticking in a rut. I think their first album came out around 2003 or so, so maybe they count if I stretch your "year or two." Four albums to date.

three trapped tigers, why?(yoni wolf is one the best lyricists ive ever come across),giraffes?giraffes!, and a whole lot of really good hip hop to boot.

i think its a hell of a time to be interested in music, so many great bands on the internet.

I was just having this discussion with a guy at work the other day. He was asking me (as a musician) how I find new music. We got into discussing how there seem to be many people who complain "there's no good music anymore" and "everything has already been done". My response is that people are just not looking in the right places...you can't hear everything that's going on if all you listen to is the radio.

HUGE fan of Regina Spektor, Venician Snares, Maximum The Hormone and 9mm Parabellum Bullet.

AWWW YEA, venetian snares is so good at what he does its scary, very high on my "must see live" list.

and yeah the radio isnt gonna help anyone find new music. only countless hours of trawling through youtube and threads like this one, and places like bandcamp.
imagine how many amazing bands the world has missed out on cause youtube didnt exist.
