i could spout a list of new music from bands a page and a half long, from all genres, that are great. music is alive and kicking, and people are constantly doing new things, redoing old things better/different, and combining things in new ways.

I'm old school. Graduated high school in the 70s.

These days, it takes me a while to find the artists I feel emulate classic rock from that era.

So much rap, Beiber, GaGa, etc, it's hard to see past the smoke.

And I'm usually a Johnny-Come-Lately with the contemporary pop/rock bands. I'll finally discover a band that has been around for a few years.

I like Wolfmother. Hives. Vines. Stuff like that.

Arcade Fire live is just insanely good. I'm not sure I have the patience for the studio stuff, but watching them pull that off live is incredible.

So, yeah, good stuff is out there, but if you're a little older like me, you have to look a little harder.

That IS a good album, but technically The Used is 10 years old.

Five years is actually a really short amount of time. The only band I can think of that comes close is 10 Years. Their first big album dropped a little over 5 years ago, but I really like their stuff.

Great thread! The Heavy, The Black Angels, Band of Skulls, Porcupine Tree (I know they're old but I'm just getting into their last couple of albums), and The Gaslight Anthem. I'm not sure of the timing of some of the others I'm thinking of...

No they definitely do not. Most people I hear describing their music as a shtick, and goofy/immature due to the 8 bit sounds. Its a shame really since they kick some serious ass. I've head their live show is intense as well too.

Continue to dig how Jeff Beck reinvents himself and finds new styles of music to add to his repertoir as well as the talent that he suurounds himself with.

This gets mentioned alot. It's good to see pure talent and creativity enjoying such a universal appeal, especially with a largely acoustic folk-based format.

I recently reviewed a new release by an Indie duo called Thao & Mirah and they're great (mainly Thao though). My review should be published on Blogcritics.org and my site on April 10 with the album coming out April 24.
