Your VERY favorite recent bands/artists

There hasn't been a major label release that I've been stoked about for YEARS. I've dug around a lot trying to find the music I like, which is heavy 60s/70s influenced rock, but with any effort at all you can find it out there. These are my favorite bands from recent years:

Check out any of these guys above. I'm HUGE into 60s and 70s rock, so most of the new bands I find are in the same vein.

Like I said, I didn't mean to be a sourpuss about it. It was just that I thought I had been making a decent effort to keep up to date on music and not just keep playing my 80s CDs over and over again. I think most people's tastes get formed in high school or through college at the latest and you need to make an effort not to get stuck in that rut. But the posts here just show me how much is going on out there that I'm still not aware of.

Cold War Kids I mentioned - Florence and the Machine I think is fantastic, same with Cage the Elephant (haven't really spent time with the new CD though). Mumford and Sons I've heard of and saw on the Grammys but haven't really listened to yet.

There's also groups that are "new to me" but I'm finding out have been around a while, like Spock's Beard, Gogol Bordello, and A Perfect Circle, so they don't fit the OP.

I have Tera Melos on Grooveshark right now. It's kind of cool, and clearly trying to get out of the box and kick it around, but so far it hasn't grabbed me and made me think I want to listen to it again and again.

I love Maps and Atlases, Check them out if you haven't they do really cool crazy stuff.


I'm also a huge fan and supporter of That 1 Guy. I've seen him live 4 times, and he has one of the greatest live shows I or my friends have seen, and that includes Maiden and Rush. And he's nothing like them at all. He's really really funky, and made his own instrument with trigger buttons on it for sound effects, foot pedals for drums, and 2 bass stringed metal pipes. If he's touring near you (and he tours EVERYWHERE) I really suggest checkin him out.

Also, just checked out Hollerado. Wow. Just... so cool.

yes! to both of these! i saw that1guy by chance as an opening act when he was out promoting his first album. good on record, fantastic to see live.

first names that come to mind are Them Crooked Vultures and Florence & the Machine

also a Belgian band called Triggerfinger that's worth getting into if you like your rock 'n roll loud and dirty. They used to play a great version of CCR's Commotion, there are many vids on Youtube (no acces here, so I can't provide links, sorry)

Black Mountain (bass player for this band is cool as hell)
Suuns (saw them first time w/ Angels a few days ago, really cool, met almost everybody from both those bands actually)
Mastodon


I don't listen to a lot of rock so this is really limited list for me.

Thanks again for sharing, everybody! This thread has become an excellent resource for discovering new bands (again, keep 'em comin'!). I've only had a chance to listen to one or two songs from about 15 bands in this thread, but here are the ones that jumped out at me so far:

Black Stone Cherry - honest hard rock

Karnivool - just great-sounding music

JJ Grey & Mofro - dripping with heartfelt, melancholy soul

Hollerado - FUN! I love this kind of music

Animals As Leaders and Venetian Snares - both are a little too avant-garde for me, but I admire and appreciate their vision and imagination

I'm going to make it a point to check out more bands as time permits.
