So our guitarist/singer told us last week he's getting married and is moving to another state. Very sudden (the drummer didn't even know he was dating this girl) He just met her at a gig on Halloween.

Our band has been together for almost 7 years (thats like 60 in band years)

So I guess (other then venting) my question is what's the best way for a rhythm section to find a new member. Front man/singer song writer.

The Drummer and I have been playing together for the last 8 years and haven't had to seek out new members in almost a decade.

any ideas of how we might find or form a band. Websites, or bars or churches? How did you find a new band after investing so much time in one group for so long?

Perhaps it will work out for them. I've known couples who married almost immediately after dating commenced, and they have stood the test of time.
On the other hand, maybe they're just practicing for the real thing.

Word of mouth is best, go to some open mic nights, etc., Craigslist may work, if you can stand all the nonsense that will almost invariably come with an ad there.
I see you are from Casper. You probably already know most of the musicians there locally. Wonder if you know an old friend of mine who lives there... PM me for her name...

Use this as your selling point. A ready-made rythem section waiting for the right singer-songwriter to step in!

Network through the club scene, hit some jams (if appropriate), advertise wherever players look for gigs, craigslist, personal contacts who know other players. You never know what you'll find.

We had the same problem with a guitarist many years ago and he's still the same old mercenary today he was then making one commitment and then putting in for others and going to the highest bidder. It was on short notice because he had conflicting dates coming up.

I ran a very specific add looking for a new player and the first guy who called had just moved here from out of state and was looking for a working band to supplement his income. I wasn't expecting too much so I arranged an informal get togther with him at my house. He was the best guitarist I've ever played with in any band during my entire career. As it turns out he was a studio first call guy back in his home state who just needed to break away from there for awhile because of a relationship gone bad.

He eventually returned home but during the 10 months he was with us we were able to grow a lot as a band and as individual musicians just because he made everyone a better player and he was one of the humblest guys you'd ever want to meet.

Don't give up hope of finding someone but on the other hand don't hesitate to offer you and your drummer as a packaged rhythm section either. I've done this with my old keyboard player more than once and because I'm also a strong vocalist we usually found work. Keep searching. It can be a pain in the ass but if you're gigging you'll find the right guy.

My thoughts exactly, provided you are looking for a gig and not a new band idea. I would say the important thing is are you looking to start a new thing, rebuild the old band, or get out to play behind some pre existing frontmen for the sake of a gig. Nothing wrong with any of them, but the angle you use to try and land a new gig will vary by your intentions i would think.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ok so this is why I hate trying to start a new band. We got a call from this guy who said he was a singer song writer recently moved here from the east coast. We thought sweet perfect idea. So we had him over to my house yesterday. Guy said he was 30 and this is true if it where 1996! He brings his acoustic guitar some no name knock off Martin lookin thing (not that brand is all that vital) he starts to play a few cords G....C.....D ok no problem. Bam starts singing a hootie and the blowfish song let her cry but with different lyrics all weird Al style (but the lyrics weren't very good). Not really what we want to do. his voice wasn't that bad but not great. Turns out he doesn't play any lead doesn't play bar cords or power cords, doesn't have anything but his cheap china guitar (name of the guitar not where it was made) No car no amp no talent!. so no more CL for us. anyone know how to get a night of your life back?

Hey, you'll get all kinds trying to "make it" with your band! That's the business. IMO, I wouldn't cut off CL, maybe make it a bit more involved for the hopeful. ;)

Ask for a demo MP3 file or maybe listen to them over the telephone? :bassist:

Getting this frustrated after only one audition doesn't bode well for your blood pressure. :atoz:

It's a process that most TBr's have gone through and it takes patience. Keep at it, you'll find the right person if you keep all your options open.
