YouTube to mp3 help needed...

@Joe Nerve - 4K Video Downloader. Find it here. It's not a service. It works on your local machine. Let's you download full video or just extract the audio. You can also select the quality level you want.

As often as YT changes how they do things (like their recent separation of the video and the audio streams on their website) the authors of this software update it. Worst case scenario, you'll have one day downtime until they publish the necessary fix. Most times it's fixed within hours. Also works with other streaming services.

Look no further. This one's bedrock. :laugh:

Disclaimer: not affiliated. But I had wasted an afternoon trying out about 20 different services and apps before I stumbled on this app. So I'm happy to help save people some time.

Yeah, that one was great - but it seems to have died. Very annoying. I used it all the time for that very purpose - to learn songs I didn't want to buy.

But I've also had to shell out that big 99 cents now and again.

And if the song isn't available on iTunes, Spotify, or other platforms? Those places are good for mainstream popular music, but what about long out of print releases that some nice person uploaded on YouTube for us to enjoy?

Lots of music from the 80s and 90s is long gone other than as overpriced collector vinyl and CDs on eBay and the like. Some many cool 7" releases have been uploaded on YouTube that would have otherwise vanished.

I know--I'm just sayin', if it's available, then I like to buy it to help support artists. If it's not, and I need it, then I'll Youtube it.
As for music just for listening pleasure, not for "work", most of the time I find Youtube audio sounds pretty bad, so I don't really go there for just listening enjoyment anyway.

I hear ya.

Unfortunately, YouTube has become one of my main sources for listening enjoyment, especially at work. While the quality runs from ok to terrible, the sheer quantity and selection of music is unmatched. Many times for me, it's the option of having a crap quality version of a song or having no version at all.

There's lotsa crazy stuff on youtube I can't find anywhere else. for me, it's usually obscure Stones bootlegs.

Anyhoo - if you have an audio interface for recording, check to see if it has an internal loopback feature so you can just record directly into your DAW. Both my MOTU and Focusrite units have this feature and I LOVE it.

First, having grown up in the years before there was any such thing as mp3s, free music, or the internet, I'm quite certain I've paid for more music than half the current population. Second, there's nothing illegal about converting the YouTube links to mp3s. Third, all I'm doing is making it much more convenient for me to learn songs (there's no difference between the YouTube audio and mp3 audio). And finally, I'm learning crazy amounts of material and never listen to any of the songs I convert once I learned them. It would become a costly habit for me.

Finally, I have tons of my own music available online for free. I'm not taking anything I'm not willing to give. I feel beyond justified converting YouTube videos into mp3s.

And finally, FINALY... I still buy complete albums and cds when available from the bands I like.

I could actually come up with a bunch of other reasons why I am fine with doing this but I'm typing this out on my phone, and I hate writing on my phone.

I'm with you on this one. Seriously, what's the difference between converting a YouTube video or copying a friend's album or cassette back in the day? Or borrowing a recording from the public library and making your own personal copy? It's the same thing, just using different technology and borrowing from a much larger base of "friends". Same goes for torrents in my book.

For music fans, the internet has given us access to the largest music library in history for little or no cost. I'm not complaining.

I go LOW tech - use Audacity to record the audio while it's playing. I don't trust freeware and adware anymore. And I use Audacity to change key and slow down anyways.
