Is anyone familiar with the new bassist of Coheed and Cambria, Zach Cooper? The band's new album came out this week, The Afterman, Ascension, and it's got some awesome bass playing on it. He plays some pretty good grooves, which can be hard to find in a progressive metal band. Especially check out the track Goodnight, Fair Lady. He's also got a very sweet tone. Is anyone familiar with his equipment? From the liner notes and a video I saw online, it looks like he plays an old P-bass and Orange amps. Does anyone know any more?

I think he was in a band that Coheed used to tour with before they got big... or something like that. Great player. I'm sad they didn't hold open auditions, C&C is one of my favorite bands.

A little late to this thread, but I'm pretty sure he plays a Fender MIA Jazz. Not sure about the amp.

He's from my town and I actually studied with him for a bit. I'm not sure if he went out and bought new gear becoming C&C's new bassist, but that's what he was playing before. He's a monster player and an even nicer guy.

Great info, thanks. I saw C&C this summer opening for Maiden. He was definitely playing a Fender, but I don't remember if it was a Jazz or a Precision.

No, Zach won't be playing Spectors. Coheed had a bass deal with Fender before Zach joined and thats why he has to play that fender 810 and head. I miss Mic's playing and Spector tone so much. Zach is good but Mic was a unique beast, and would even throw Jaco solos in the final cut. They lost alot of creativity when they lost Mic, but that's what heroin will do.

He's been playing Fender precision basses exclusively the past few years. When he first joined he played his Fender Jazz for a while and then for the past couple of years he's been playing 4 string Fender P's with Seymour Duncan pick-ups. He is running the new Fender Bassman tube head and 2 8x10's, one of the new vintage 810's on his side of the stage and the 810 Mic Todd had that is the slightly older, more modern looking Fender 8x10.

Zach has really grown on me, he has a playing voice as unique as Mic's was, just different. Mic inspired me to start playing bass and I think I was just bummed when he did what he did. Zach also seems like the nicest and coolest guy in existence.

I saw them over the summer and he was playing what looked like an old Peavey.

He's been pictured with that old T-40 (or something similar) in a lot of their pictures lately.

Interesting note earlier in the thread about them having a deal with Fender. I often wondered why Mic switched from Spectors to Fenders on the "No World for Tomorrow" album, but always GREATLY preferred the bass tone on that album to the ones before it.

On the topic of Zach in general: He seems like a good fit for the band. He plays well against Josh's beats that often land in an unorthodox way (he plays his kick drum behind the 1 a lot of the time, and being an "open" style player puts his hands in different positions than the typical "closed" style that is much more prevelant). He also seems to be considerably more stable than Mic.

On the topic of Mic: Is he still in prison?

On the topic of Color Before the Sun: I'm honestly not loving it. It's an okay album, but it ranks down there with Year of the Black Rainbow for me. Those two albums are tied in last place for their catalog, with many of the members solo efforts being much better to me. Maybe it'll grow on me.

On the topic of rambling: I'm doing that... Now I'm done :p

I’m trying to figure out how to get that little clank, but not really clank, tone he has in Evagria the Faithful. I think I have the low end down, but there is something in the mids or highs that I’m missing.
