Because they just heard of it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't cheapo Indonesian acoustics start this build method? Why do many reviewers act like it's a super big deal?

Just curious.
Stew Mac does sell unslotted nuts. The potential issue that I see with them is that the nut itself is kind of thin, maybe ok for guitar, not sure how it holds up with slots for bass strings cut into it.
No slots?? I can imagine all sorts of intonation issues especially when you have an aggressive plucking technique.

Thanks for posting. I was too embarrassed to ask.
There's no best. In practice an open note is different on a bone or synthetic nut than a fretted note and a zero fret is just a fret. Is that a big deal? To some, yes. Is it best? that's subjective. In my observation the reason some players try to avoid open notes is they sound different. But it's also really hard to beat the boom of an open E string. It's just subjective. There's no valid reason for people to address it as a boutique feature but some do. Zero frets have been around forever.
I've heard all the plusses and benefits listed in this thread.
I've also heard that the zero fret wears down faster than the rest due to it being taller. Not sure if thats true, or if thats a real issue.
Good question. I don't know if they're supposed to be slotted. May depend on the builder's intent.
I haven't done a direct comparison as all of my instruments are different from each other and have different strings.Based on your experience with those do you believe there's much of a discernible difference between those two basses versus how open strings/notes sound compared to fretted notes on other basses that do not have a zero fret?
Don't worry, I'm sure I'll ask waaayyyy dumber stuff!
They come unslotted so you can slot it yourself.
