Zon Hyperbass

outstanding playing sir!
I had the pleasure a few years back while working a fest to meet Mr M.
He is a gracious humble man. Interesting story, as he was playing his set Mr. Wooten came and video taped his entire set. After the music, the two bass monsters had a meeting of minds. I happen to be there :)

Simply beautiful sir. My hat is off to you. Seeing you preform the piece makes it somewhat more accessible for my mind to comprehend. When I listen to these recordings my mind reels not believing these things are possible, or they can't be done in one take without overdubs. You sir have allayed my doubts but not my fears. I know I do not possess the patience to learn these things. I spent years learning several Joco pieces but these are something else altogether. You are truly blessed with a gift. Thank you for sharing it.
Thank you so much Kirk! I know what you mean, when I hear Manring play I can't believe he's doing all these crazy things at once! And after learning this piece I'm blown away at how masterfully he composes for a medium I have such a tricky time trying to just play!

Jaco's nothing to cough at! If you can play some of Jaco's pieces you have all the hands, fingers, and ears required to play this style. You're right that it takes patience, but if you can break it down into small enough parts, it starts to seem possible. I believe you can learn anything that way.

Thanks again for all the kind words!

Thank you sir!
That's an awesome story:-) I'd be egger to hear what they said!

Riley, regardless of how you did it you mastered that song. I would love to spend time with you in a lesson or two.

As for folks saying they could never do something like what you accomplished learning Enormous Room, pish-posh.

I never thought I could play fretless. My old '78 Jazz made that possible. 5 strings? NO WAY! But spending time with my Brian Moore i5 and it's second nature. 6 strings? I knew I could do it, but never thought I'd make use of the instrument. One Carvin LB76F later and I'm in love with not only Carvin basses but playing a 6-stringed bass.

So, what's next?

Riley - beautiful job on that complex and daunting piece of Manring Artistry.

A True Story:
Probably more than 20 years ago I was working as a Para-Beagle at a Major San Francisco Law firm at Embarcadero Center.
One day at lunch on the ground floor of one of the towers near the only record store in the complex a free show occured that was a Windham Hill Records show case.

The event featured alternating sets by Windham Hill Founder and Guitarist Will Ackerman and bassist Michael Manring.

Me and a few pals witnessed the show and during Michaels 2nd set he donned two Zon basses and proceeded to blow minds with his tapping and D-tuning techniques. After one more set by Ackerman, Michael came back on for his 3rd performance. Some clown from the crowd (*me) yelled out somewhat sarcastically: "Why don'tcha try playing three basses?"

Next thing I knew I was standing onstage cradling bass #3 in my arms as Michael proceeded to ably play a set using all three basses.

That was a very memorable and very affecting experience for me as a musician.

I managed to see him a number of times over the years, including a few really amazing shows at Great American Music Hall with Michael Hedges.
I think I saw a video of that on youtube!
