Zoom B3 As Preamp Part 2

I see Charlie, I was thinking of a different (nonsense) configuration.
Also @ticol07 thanks a lot for the explanation. I'l start experimenting the different configurations today. Also this will change the way I send my signal playing live.

Let me see if I didn't get lost:

-B3 to Input. B3 to mixer. I get mixed sound onstage and the audience get the B3 only.
-B3 to FX LOOP. B3 to mixer. Both me and the audience get the B3 alone, the combo EQ is ignored.
-B3 to Input. Combo to mixer. Both me and the audience get mixed sound.
-B3 to FX LOOP. Combo to mixer. Both me and the audience get B3 alone (This should basically sound the same on the PA as scenario nº2 right?)

So depending on how I want or not to use the amp EQ and have the same sound onstage and to the audience I have 4 different options to consider. Interesting :)

Or you could do B3>Mixer>IEM and leave the combo at home. Personally, I run B3>Input>Amp DI into FOH. I never use amp models (already using tubes) and all my 'eq' and effects are dialed in to be played through my amp, including the eq section (I also never touch my amp settings once set).

The band has no means of acquiring IEM. All the income will be applied to much more basic needs for now. But, granted things go the right way, maybe that'd be an option in the future.
Besides, T have to bring the combo I've payed hard earned money for that thing it better do something even if just standing there making me look cooler on stage next to it :)

Running into a volume issue...I don't really have any. The B3 is a part of a pedalboard, but it is last in the chain, so that should basically be a non issue. Running the B3 into a Rane DC24 and then into a Crown XLS1500. The volume persists even if I take the Rane out of the equation so it's not that. Power Amp is being run in Stereo Mode - 525w @ 4ohm per channel. Cab is a custom made 212 rated at 600w @ 4ohm.

B3 settings:
Golbal: 65
Total: 100
Patch: Max
Sim Level (when applicable): 0%

If I turn Global/Total up more I start clipping . Happens if I'm using a hot bass or not.

What the heck am I missing? Anyone want to help me troubleshoot?

Hi guys, just wanted to share my experience with the EV ZLX15p. It started out pretty bumpy. Ordered mine in mid April. Found a provider who hadn't yet raised prices at that time, so € 419, good price. They start from € 499 nowadays. Anyway, DHL screwed up big time and failed to deliver for two weeks. In the meantime the shop had a second one shipped to me via UPS, so I could get going. Took it to rehearsal and the guy went just crazy about it, because it was so much clearer and more present than my previous Peavey 4x10 rig (which I managed to sell in the meantime).

I took the chance to read through this thread again from the beginning. Must say, that what you did here, Charlie, Andreas, Ticol and all the others is nothing short of awesome and saved me incredible time and frustration to get my Zoom+ZLX rig set up. If any of you guys should make it to Berlin some day, drop me a note and I'll treat you to a few drinks.

OK, it turned out with the ZLX at 250W RMS, headroom is the decisive factor. I am currently playing in a three piece post-punk set. Drummer is pretty loud and guitard has an Engl 50W + 4x12 Marshall cab, and he loves to play distorted, so it's loud inevitably. I can keep up with them, but I need to take care, not to run the preamp into clipping. So it has turned out, that leaving the preamp at one to two o'clock and controlling the overalll volume with the master knob is fine. Having master volume at 0db is OK for rehearsal.

I followed your advice on the B3 and have global and total volume at 100. My impression is, that I could have gone at 120 both, but I just didn't want to max it out. For the band, I needed four settings: clean, clean overdriven, tube dirty and tube dirty overdriven. I chose the SWR and the SVT sim. I started out with them all EQ settings at neutral and cab sim at zero. Then I adjusted gain and master to my liking but tried to keep the volume level with amp sim witched off. Then I dialed in tone and cab sim to my liking. I can confirm, that in a band setting you will find yourself reducing bass and boosting mids. Highs don't matter that much, I have them mostly neutral or maybe at two. Cab sims mostly 100%. For the clean overdriven setting I added the BassPre, and it does a fairly decent job. For the dirty overdriven setting, I just created a second patch, where I just cranked the SVT sim more up. Works. Also, I can confirm, that boosting the mids ad 1.2 kHz works nicely in a band setting, as it adds clarity but without the zing you get when you boost the highs too much. For more vintage thumpy tones I prefer boosting 200 Hz.

Here's my current arsenal:

The SMX compressor comes in handy when you whant to attenuate various basses. I passive and active basses with different output levels. I can use the input knob on the SMX to adapt to that.

The thing that makes me most happy is, that the ZLX delivers the full tone even at low volumes. So it's perfect for practising at home. Just set the volume at -30db and you're done, and the neighbors won't complain. So, when DHL finally decided to deliver, I simply kept the second ZLX. One at home, one at rehearsal, and both of them when I need volume. The only drawback so far is really, that the volume knob is on the back, I still need to see how this works out in a gigging situation. Consider buying a volume/expression pedal for volume setting. Next gig will most probably be on August 1st. Will keep you posted.

Do you have a regular old combo amp (guitar or bass) or a powered PA speaker kicking around that you can plug the B-3 into directly? Something is definitely not right there. Alternatively, have you tried the Crown XLS1500 with your speaker and something other than the B-3 driving it, like a mixing console? I know that 2x12 speakers may sound funky from a mixing board, but this is just to confirm gain structure and that the XLS 1500 is working properly. Have you confirmed that the DSP settings on the XLS1500 are proper for what you're doing? There are a bunch of different "modes" on that series of amp, hi/low pass filters, a crossover mode, built-in limiting, etc. Make sure these are defaulted or set so both channels are set for full range operation with no filtering, for starters.

The B-3 should drive this set up without too much trouble, though some amp inputs require a bit more output than others. Still, there's plenty of gain from the B-3 do this. Confirm that the B3, amp, cab are all working properly first and even swap speaker cables for testing comparison.

Hi Guys! Could you help me, please? I use my B3 straight to a Pigtronix Infinity Looper, and then to the amp. The infinity's input are unbalanced(p10). So i run a cable a p10 cable from B3 to looper. Any idea if i must put a DI on my chain(even aware that B3 has a DI, when using xlr)?

The Infinity is an excellent pedal and I would connect it the same way as you have when used along with the B3. The XLR out of the B3 will not contain the Infinity output, but this can easily be worked-around by using an extra DI box connected after the Infinity and using that to provide the balanced signal to mixer/FOH (instead of using the B3's XLR.)

Cheers!

Exactly what i thought. So i must connect B3 > Infinity, with unbalanced output B3 > Infinity input, right? I was worry about some impedance match issues, beetwen B3 and the post-Infinity DI. Thank you!

CharlieC....thanks very much for your complete and detailed knowledge of the innards of the B3. I have had mine since they were released and had no issues, until lately, and really it's not much of an issue, but wondering if you had any thoughts. My setup is bass-->B3----> Line6 Soundscape,(via xlr out, post) then to power amp and 2x Fender 15s. The B3 is powered by its own power adaptor. The Line6 mixer also takes mikes and guitar inputs on other tracks. This is just a rehearsal setup. Occasionally, and unpredictably, a very short 'pop' will occur. We have isolated it to the B3, only when patches are available, but not necessarily active ie. it doesn't occur when the xlr output is set to 'pre'. I've tried ground lift and no difference. It's not too much of a problem, but when the 'pop' happens, the others look straight at me! I've run out of ideas. I only use occasional effects. The most common patch has: comp-muff-chorus. This will happen with both my jazz fretless and American Deluxe jazz. This doesn't worry me much, but you know, guitarists are divas....
Any ideas?

Many thanks, and without question, the other residents on this thread also add much value here.

Like yourself, I am not sure where and why this pop is being introduced. You already have tried lifting the ground which was what I was going to suggest and you have also mentioned this problem did not exist until lately, which is key info.

I am going to both guess and suggest:

1) Try another power adapter or if none available, temporarily switch to battery power to challenge a possible power adapter issue.

2) Confirm that the pop is not being caused by cables/jacks from your bass down to the board. Perhaps movement-induced if from the bass output. Also try another (and passive) bass. If your bass is active, try fresh batteries. Perhaps try the 1/4" out from the B3 to the mixer as well.

3) Check if these pops are from signal clipping, either inside the B3 or at the input of the mixer. The level that goes into the B3 is what should approximately comes out, then from there, ensure your max signal level at the board is not clipping in the red.

4) I am assuming the connected speakers are powered. If so, run the B3 directly into one or both of them without the mixer in between and see if the pop still occurs.

5) "Factory-reset" the B3 if all else fails.

Cheers!

Thanks very much for the recommendations CharlieC.....next time I'm over there I will try them out. The clipping is something I hadn't yet tested. I'll try the output level in the B3. There doesn't appear to be any 'red zones' on the soundscape...but I'll give it a go. The cables all seem ok, but I'll also try the 1/4" output as well. Also thanks to all the other contributors to this well focussed forum...all the best. I'll let you all know if I have any success.

Just bumping one of my favorite topics of TB!

And while I'm here: yesterday I decided to try the Edit and Share software and it's actually pretty cool! The visuals are pleasant and makes everything faster :) However, I got a LOT of noise. I didn't have another bass and cable with me to try but I wonder if it had anything to do with the proximity to the laptop? The B3 is connected through USB so it can't be far from the PC. The B3 output had headphones connected. Should I move the bass and B3 as far as possible from the PC to avoid interference? Although that makes it hard to work with the software.
