Zoom B3 multi-effects

I have joined the ranks of B3 ownership. I picked up one on eBay and got it yesterday. I have been playing it some today, and really, really like it. It's very easy to figure out and play, and the effects and modeling are super nice. I was never a separate pedals effects player. I tried a number of multi-effect units, but I always eventually preferred straight bass into amp. However, the B3 has already shown me that effects can be utilized easily, not with difficulty. All I have to do is learn the pedals, and tweak the settings!

My question is this. I have not yet been able to determine if it's possible to turn off one or two of the device assignments in the three slots. I don't see a "No Device" or "No Assignment" setting available when I scroll through the settings.

It seems logical to me that if you only want one effect, or one amp sim, and nothing else, that it should be possible to have nothing showing in the unused displays, rather than having to have something showing in all three, and have to turn those off via footswitch.

Is there any way to do this?

There is no "No Device" or "No Assignment" setting available. Just switch the effect off with the related footswitch 1-3. That's it. You may also bypass the whole patch setting by holding the middel button for > 1sec (switches to tuning mode as well). But be aware that this is not a true (hardwired) bypass.

Fellow B3 owners:

I (like many of you) emailed Zoom to ask about the firmware upgrade for 6 effects. I got the same frustrating email about them not having plans to upgrade. I then responded to ask why. Here's the response.

Dear Andrew,
Thank you for your reply.

We were able to improve the G3 because it could have available capacity for DSP chip. However, as we developed the B3 after improving the G3, it has not available capacity for DSP. If we improve the B3 as the G3, we need make researches for DSP chip. Maybe, it will take the time and huge cost.

We hope you will understand the situation.

just got this replay too, this is bummer i was very looking forward for an update.

i have also made it clear in my emails that i am looking forward to the B5 to appear on the market. :)
hopefully they will consider this request seriously.

What is going on with the terrible grammar in the replies from zoom? I understand that they are not based in the US so English may not be the writer's first language but they are a corporate entity and (in my opinion) that stuff makes them look like a Chinese Craigslist scam!
To all international TBers: please note that I am not referring to you here! My own English and grammar are far from perfect but we are not a multi-national company, someone should be checking this stuff before they send it.

+1. And English actually is my third spoken lenguage and was able to see those grammar mistakes.

I have a G3 as well as my B3, so I would probably just link the two together if I ever wanted more than 3 effects at once.
Many of the effects in the G3 and B3 are the same.

OzzyGreg, would you consider buying a G3 to use it solely for the extra 3 effects even if you only play bass, or would you gof or the B3? I'm really just interested in the effects; pre-amps, amps, and cab simulators are not really important to me

Reading the feedback from Zoom; does this indicate the B3 DSP has less calc power than G3s DSP (different DSPs) or does it mean that the B3s software uses more DSP capacity than the G3s software (but share the same DSP) ?

Definately the B3.
At least you can be sure that the effects are bass-focused. Sure the effects are named the same between the two units, but you never know.

If I linked the two together it would be to untilize the generic stuff like reverbs/delays etc. of the G3 while using the B3 for the bass effects I wanted.

I've never gotten around to A-B'ing all of the B3's effects against the G3's to see if my ears can tell any difference, but to be safe I'd buy the B3.

same here, i am amazed by the quality of how they sound and not to mention all the rest of the effects. you can make absolutely amazing things with it from sound shaping to spacy synths.

I mentioned this before, but things can get overlooked pretty quick here!

If I were to get one I would be using it at church going right to the PA. (We're now using in ear monitors). For the most part there's only two sounds I'd be interested in getting. One, would be a good tone for fingerstyle and the other would be a good tone when I use a pick. I also play Jazz basses...4 and 5 string.

Because I've never used a unit like this before what would be the best way for me to set tones? I have a GK MB115, so would I go into the amps AUX to set the tones? Or should I hook it up to my stereo (it's biggie) in the basement and set the tones thru that? Or thru my little recording setup?

Just not sure which would be the best way.

If you were to get a B3, I envision that you would go from your bass, to the B3, and then to the PA as you currently do. You would monitor yourself as you currently do, using the IEMs, unless you feel a change is needed.

I understand what you're saying and you're right.

But as far as initially setting up the tones at home to use at church....that's where I'm not sure by which means would give me the best results.
