Zoom b3 patch Ideas

Thanks for the input. I definitely know all about using dirt effects =0) but I was just wondering specifically how the B3's pre and amp models sounded for dirt, since the dedicated dirt-pedal models don't get great reviews. I assumed I'd try the SVT model and SABDDI but I didn't know the BB would get dirty. Thanks!

Dirt is really a matter of personal tastes.
I think some of the B3 models work well for my needs.
And yes the BB Preamp can get very dirty and thick.
I find that the dirts of the B3 need to be set with not to high Drive/Gain values because they can be very heavy and then I find them to loose too much definition.
When I use the Squeak for example, I set the Gain and the Blend around 20.
There's also the Marshall amp sim that can get interesting overdiven tones with a more coloured tone than the SVT.(note that only the SVT and the Marshall models are getting dirty when gain is pushed, the other models stay clean).

I tried some other dirts of the B3 as the MetalDrive, DS-1, Big Muff, Fuzz,... but I never got good results in a band setting. But it may be my settings which were not right.

The SABDDI sounds really close to the real one, but that heavy mid scoop doesn't fit my needs for a dirt I want to engage mid song for example. The SVT is easy to set for a gentle push of the mids with dirt in them, or for very subtle dirt.

You can always couple a dirt with another and some eq to really tailor things. I did that during some time but I ended with a lot of patches and didn't find it comfortable for live use. So now I stick to a more simple one effect at a time.

Have any of you guys used the Preamps/Amp Sims *just* for dirt?

For instance, I'm getting a B3 and will gladly use it for dirt, if I can get good drives out of it... but, things like the ODB3 model don't give me a great impression in the demos I've heard thus far. So I thought maybe I'd try the SABDDI model, or maybe the Acoustic or SVT models with 0% cabinet, just for their dirt ability. Does that kind of thing sound just like a pedal dirt would in the chain, or would it be much of a fundamental tone change? (I'm going to use the B3 just as a variable string of stomps into the front of an amp, not using the 3 slots to make 'one sound' for each patch)

I use the Sansamp just for dirt!

Well, I got the B3 today and I don't think the dirt options are too bad. Thus far I'm using the SABDDI for OD and the Fuzzface for fuzz; still need to explore the other options. The OD isn't as transparent as the one on my Disnortion but it's got plenty of presence and is decently responsive - just need to keep tweaking the treble and presence dials I think.

I've got two three-pedal setups so far: my 'standard' set of OD, filter and univibe, and a second set with octaver, fuzz and probably another filter to make that set capable of a synth-type sound without dipping into the wacky synth effects directly.

Good stuff so far! I have a bit of noise when the OD is on, but that may be due to using the gator power brick attached to my board; I'll try it with the OEM power and see if it gets better. It's too bad we can't do a global compressor and noise gate.

I didn't think of using the SVT setting for a dirt setting! I will try this soon!

I assume somebody on TB has talked about this tone at some point, but to my ears off the cuff it just sounds like a scoopy SABDDI tone - sounds like that trademark little bit of drive and reduced mids/clicky highs. The B3's SABDDI model is pretty pleasant to my ears if not perfectly emulated.

And this also a Stingray tone. So, without the appropriate bass, it may be difficult to cope exactly.
What would be interesting is to compare it to some live tone when Tim Commeford plays this song with his jazz bass.

You always must doing thinks like the B3 is a real rig.Always.Have you ever try that order with real one rig?I don't thing so .Keep it like you have it right now.Maybe you must try to switch the EQ with the Comp.The amp,and ofc the cab must be last.Only when you have delay and reverb that effects go last,after the amp.

Thanks. My live rig has compressor and EQ built into the amp, So i never really messed with pedals. When I play smaller places I will just use the B3 with DI to the sound system, so I try to emulate my amp/cab sound. I saw some examples of PC software showing basically what I have, then post processing effects (which I've never used on bass). Honestly, I just need to take some time to play around with the B3. I just created my sound in 10 minutes, saved it, and started playing...and that was like a year ago when I got it.

I'll be jumping into this thread soon as I just ordered my B3 from GC today after trading in a couple pedals for their trade in, trade up deal. The Zoom ended up costing me $179 after 10% off! My chain will now be Tuner - Line 6 M5 - B3 (direct out) - Ashdown ABM 500. I'm going to experiment with going direct out from the Ashdown also.

Try turning the treble on the Ac Bs Pre all the way down - works for me. That's the one that has a HPF in it (labeled "Depth" and works in reverse).

The first one sounds like a compressed distorted sound. here's what I came up with.

Marillion bass distortion

Section 1: m comp: thresh: 20, ratio: 5, level: 100, attack: 4

Section 2: d.i plus: bass: 4, mid: 3, treble: -4, gain: 50, blend: 45, level: 110, color: on, chan: dist

Section 3: heaven: bass: 4, mid: 4, treble: 3, 250hz, gain: 50, level: 85, enhnc: 2, cab: e4x10, mix: 50

the 2nd one kinda sounds like a clean pitch shifting effect. and the 3rd one seems like a real synch. it sounds like a basic bright bass sound with some compression. here's what I came up with for the 3rd one.

Marillion clean bass

Section 1: m comp: thresh: 20, ratio: 5, level: 100, attack: 4

Section 2: exciter: bass: 3, treble: 2, level: 80 or pitchsift: shift: 0, tone: 4, balance: 50, fine: 5, level: 100

Section 3: heaven: bass: 4, mid: 4, treble: 3, 250hz, gain: 50, level: 85, enhnc: 2, cab: e4x10, mix: 50

You can try the presence control of the Bassdrive,or the Graphic EQ,but this is not a real HP filter.The only one that i thing is a HiPass Filter is the Hi Cut of the DI5 preamp and the Ultra Cut of the SVT amp.

First off I prefer crystalman, second that sounds like a tube overdrive sound. perhaps this patch would work.

Section 1: d comp: sense: 5, tone: 8, level: 90, attack: fast

Section 2: t-scream: gain: 25, tone: 70, level: 100, balance: 45

Section 3: svt: bass: 2, mid: 4, treble: 3, midfq: 300hz, gain: 35, level: 45, ultra: both, cab: ha4x10, mix: 50

The beginning sounds like there's some wah effects. everything else sounds like a basic clean bass sound with some compression and maybe and exciter effect to add some punch to the sounds. and if I'm not mistaken, sounds like a jazz bass is being played on the track.

Really? the bass track in the original was a synth bass? I would of thought it was a fretless bass.

Me too. Along with most of the tracks on Graceland, Black Velvet is *the* sound I think of whenever I think of what a fretless bass sounds like.

But, there were at least 3 basses in that video and they all seemed to have frets
