Recorded on an H2. Bass response is nice in my opinion.

+1... I use an H2 a lot, recording all rehearsals and gigs. It works well IMO/E and bass sounds good.

I'm having the same issues with the firmware update. I currently have 1.40 and try to update to the 1.70 version...no dice. Just keep getting error on two different cards.

What did they tell you to do that finally worked.

Thanks

To the guys with clipping issues...... what level do you have your mic's set at? I've got mine on low, and it doesn't even come close to clipping. Add in the live compressor, and it sounds great. And a big plus one on the s/n ratio. We set mine up so the levels are bouncing around the middle of the scale. For placement, we'll watch the levels, and put it where all the meters are topping out at about the same level.

I have tried to get "cute" with mine, and dumped files into Reaper to mix, but ultimately, putting them into Audacity, normalizing, compressing and limiting, then quick mix has yielded the best results (good sound, yet quick).

My mic sensitivity is set to low. I guess my guitarist is, ummm, a little loud for the room;) For him volume and tone are on the same knob.

Also, it is my understanding that the compression is "after the fact" digital compression, which occurs after the signal has clipped in my situation.

The band I'm in is a trio that plays blues and classic rock. It is the guitarists show. He's older (in his 60's) and knows what he likes. So, I put in ear plugs and crank my Aguilar DB750, it's a lot of fun.

Like you, I found a good spot to place the H2, but it is as far as the room allows me to be from the offending sound (snare mostly, but occasional vocal spikes too). If the room were 2 ft. smaller I'd be out of luck, and that is worth sharing.

Can anyone confirm if the Tascam's are fully adjustable? It looks like they have a dial instead of a 3 position mic sensitivity switch, but it is hard to tell from the info on the web.

Yeah but...within those 3 positions there is an infinite range available via the rocker switch so, it's probably more adjustable in gain structure than having one set dial.

The last time I used mine, it was sitting at the mix desk of Planet Fest. The db meter right next to it was averaging 118db. That's, "OMG are you out of your effing mind? Hand me those ear plugs" loud.

I absolutely adore this thing. Being able to record our rehearsals has made us so much better, playing and arraging wise.

You should also note where you point it, not only where it stands. Having a mic stand for the H2 is handy. Put it on stand-by and listen where it sounds good. If the bass is boomy you might want to tip a little bit, pointing to the roof, maybe?

I'm sorry I don't understand what you mean here. I was trying to find out if the Tascams have a dial that can make fine adjustments to input level in the Analog domain (i.e. before digital clipping occurs). I am assuming a dial would go from 0 to some higher gain level like 10. My issue is that I've needed a level lower than the "low" setting on the H2 to avoid digital clipping.

And if you were near the stage with the H2 it would have been clipping and you would have had to leave your awesome seat and move back.

Again, I've been able to work around this limitation; the H2 works well for me and sounds awesome (unless I record in mp3 mode which creates awful digital chirps at random intervals, again, I avoid doing this and all is well). I like my H2 a lot, but I don't love it.

I really like the Zoom H2. I had a similar dilemma a few months ago before I finally bought it, and it's great. Really easy to use, and it sounds great for how cheap it is. I've recorded some of my bands jam sessions with it, and plan to use it for every one from now on. Some samples are on my band's myspace, PM if you want the link. I'd put it here, but I don't wanna be accused of a cheap plug haha.

I love how the mic can record in a 360 degree field, it really makes recording jams easier. We just put it pretty close to the drums, and place our amps/speakers around the other side of it so its spread out evenly. The only drawback is that when you record in 360 degrees, you have to record as a .wav file, which is significantly larger than .mp3. So when I chop up the tracks afterward, I have to convert each one from wav to mp3. I kinda started to rant there...oh well i'm over it :)

Did you follow the instructions to a T?

1. download and unzip the bin file.
2. load the bin file into the root directory of the SD card either directly or by hooking up the H2 to your PC. I loaded mine directly using a card reader.
3. Connect the AC adapter to your H2
4. Turn on the H2 while also pressing the start/stop button.
5. Make sure the arrow is pointing at OK (not pointing at Cancel)
6. Press the red record button

They told me to use the original (smaller) 512MB card my H2 originally came with. I had upgraded to a 16GB card & that's why my upgrades failed.
I put the old card in & the update was successful. Then popped my big card back in & everything was cool.

Good luck.
