So back in early December I bought a Zoom LiveTrak L-20. The plan of course was to start recording some originals the band I was in had planned on working on. But that isn't working out so the drummer and I got together with another guitar player / vocalist and started working with him two weeks ago as a 3 piece. Half of the other band, a 4 piece, is now mad, but hey, show up for practice more than once in 7 weeks and you might not be mad. Anyway that's a story for another time.
1st let me say, yeah there's some things that could have been done better.
I ran my bass into a Sansamp Bass Driver DI and from there straight into the board.
The mic used for vocals is one of 3 1970s era Univox CE-5 mics that I have sitting around.
We also lined a box with eggshell foam and shove it onto the mic stand for the vocals to help shield the mic some from the guitar cab. We also lined a box with foam and then placed it in front of the guitar cab so it would cover up most of the cab and the two SM57 mics recording it.
The room itself is 10 x 10, maybe 12 x 12 at best. one wall is brick, one wall is sheetrock, and two walls are covered in a wood planking. The floor is plywood. The ceiling is sheetrock. It's actually turned out to be a pretty decent room for acoustics unless you're recording with a mic and you got cabs running, bass, pa, guitar, etc.... There is no isolation of any mics unless you go to using headphones. Or if you record all the instruments and then record the vocals, or record the vocals at the same time but then go back and overdub them with everything else in playback mode.
For editing I didn't do anything except for dropping the volume level for a millisec because of one spike on the vocal track. Other than that, this is exactly as it was recorded at the board. I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the LiveTrak L-20 and it's capabilities and I know I haven't even scratched the surface good.
This is also only my 2nd time recording with this board. I haven't done any recording or touched any recording gear since the old ping ponging of tracks we use to do on a Fostex 4 track machine back in the 90s. So yeah I'm a little rusty there.
So this is one of the recordings we came up with using my LiveTrak L-20 while we were running through some cover tunes. And we did it in one take.

- A little reverb on the vocal track.
- The guitar solo sounds a little country, but that's okay for now. I've heard this guitarist shred and that solo can be changed later.
