Zoom MS60/B3 para eq help

This brings up an important point...
if one can match the original equipment manual to the model, one can get a lot more insight into how to use the model.

For instance the Avalon U5 has product literature (the "Di5" model on the zoom) that clearly shows how the 6 pre-shape filters work. Which is VERY handy for using the unit. One of my FAVOURITE models, by the way... just LOVE it!

Thanks guys! This will come in real handy when building patches. I was messing with my 60b last night for a long time and man, does it have a crap load of options/sounds/tones! Im so glad I picked one of these up. I think its going to end up being an invaluable tool in my arsenal. I was playing with that "Fishman" model last night for the first time and I really liked a lot of what it has to offer. Stoked!
 
A good High pass filter in the B3 (I don't know if it's in the ms-60b too) is the AC Bs Pre.
The Depth rolls off the lows :
- at 10 -> no roll off (full bass)
- at 0 -> like an HPF fixed at 200Hz
and inbetween :
- at 5 : 100Hz
- at 6 : 80Hz
- at 7 : 70Hz
- at 8 : 60Hz
- at 9 : 40Hz
(I made very quick measurements, so it's "almost" these frequencies).

After that the frequencies are set that way on this preamp :
- Bass : 40Hz
- Low-Mid : 800Hz (Low mids ???)
- Hi-Mids : 4kHZ
- Treble : 7kHz
and you can select the frequencie you want as Mids (real low mids for example :) ).

Another information : the 3 mids parameters have a smaller Q than the mids of the Amp Sims (so acts on a larger band).

-> This preamp can be a really good tone shaper.

Anyone tried using the para EQ as a high pass filter? I'm going to experiment with it though it's not a true steep shelving EQ. But if I set a low frequency and a Q that's not too wide it might work..?

I don't think it will work well... You'll just get a peak (or trough) centered at your selected frequency...
I think the splitter EQ would work better ... Even better would be to daisy chain two splitters together to get a steeper slope

The splitter makes a perfect hi and lo pass filter, I use it often to taylor patches.
It's a bit annoygin to waste a spot for such a mundane function but so far it is the only way I found.

I use the para EQ all the time as a hpf - to my ears it has a steeper slope than the splitter.

I also use - and prefer over all - the Ac Bs Pre's hpf

It's difficult to tell with one's ears the slope of an hpf... they actually may both be the same (1st or 2nd order)...
However, all that really matters is if it works for you.

On the subject of the Ac Bs Pre... I love this effect/sim! it is very powerful, easy to use, and quite useful in getting the right sound in a difficult room.

Sorry to revive an old thread!! If the Depth control notches out between 40hz-200hz, how can we control the amount of db by? Is this the 'level' control? How does the Gain control respond with the level control?

Also, would it be dumb then to play with the Bass control (as you mentioned, set at 40hz) on the 2nd page of the AC Bs Pre?

There's no "fine adjust" on the HPF. It is unity gain above the cutoff frequency, but has a fixed slope of x dB per octave below that point.

For example, with a 12dB per octave HPF set at 60 Hz, tones at 30 Hz would be down 12 dB, and 15 Hz would be down 24 dB.

There's nothing wrong with combining an HPF with a bit of bass boost. It's an old trick for getting some nice midbass punch, without introducing a lot of subsonic flub...
