Double Bass Zyex light

The G string was very bright and zingy, while the other strings had a nice and woody growl -- after a bit over a week I was so annoyed by the G string that I went back to my Evah Pirazzi weich (maybe a combination of the Zyex with another G string might be interesting but didn't go there).

Zyex MEDIUMS usually settled in and lost that zing after about a week or so of constant playing and stretching for me. For them to sound truly broken in and WARM took a couple of weeks at least. It will not go away after just a couple of days. I have yet to use a set of Zyex LIGHTS across the board, but mediums exhibited that characteristic for sure.... but not long enough for me to be too annoyed. Part of the cost of entry. Helicore Hybrids started out metallic and stayed that way for me - much more so than the Zyex did.

My G took a couple months to fully settle in. It was annoying and I did almost rip them of a couple times. The set was otherwise sounding and feeling really good so I stuck with them. Worth it for me as I love these on my bass now. The G especially really transformed and I'm not getting any of the peeeow the was there when new. I'm not looking forward to putting a new set on though.

In general, there are no strings that immediately sound perfect on upright, and you have to account for that. My Aquila Gold Springs synthetic gut D and G took almost 2 MONTHS to settle in and remotely sound musical. They kept stretching and stretching and settling in. i.e., don't expect to change strings on an upright the week of a gig and expect them to be remotely settled. Plan ahead.

This is true, but I would say the Zyex took a lot longer than other strings I've used. Spiros, for example, loose the initial intense metallic twang in a couple weeks and after a month or so have the broken in sound that last for a long time. The Zyex G holds that metallic twang for a couple months. All depends on how much you play, action, technique, etc.

That could be a difference between the mediums vs lights, but I can only speak directly about the mediums. They settled within a couple of weeks of regular playing.

I’ve been playing the Lights for awhile now, first all 4, then with a Heliocore E and for now with Spiro Weichs on the A and E. The twang starts leaving after around two weeks, which is a long-ish time, but for me it has been worth it, they sound great on my Juzek. They also take a long time to stretch out, whether new or old, usually around 10 days, which is a big drag, that’s part of the reason I put the Weich on

Amen to ALL of this. I put an set of lights on, played the snot out of them for a month, and pulled off the E and put in a Spiro Mittel E and a Weich A. If you look at the tensions, they work with each other. Now, I couldn't be happier! I am not looking forward to changing the Zyex light D and G, but when the time comes, it'll sound like a banjo in my practice space for a few weeks. Rosin helps a lot.
Thumb position is where these strings shine, IMO. Wooo-wee are they fun, and amplify REALLY well, at least on my bass. I love 'em. But Spiros on the bottom 2, 100%, even with the Mittel/weich E and A. Imma happy walker!
YMMV, karrits, 'setera
