Double Bass Zyex string with a bow.....

Thanks! I kept thinking I was crazy! The reviews for Zyex were good so I thought it must be me or my bass, but I've never had this problem before. Obligatos pushed almost three years on my bass before sounding dead. I'm definitely gonna call them. I don't want to keep them on much longer and have no recourse.

Hmm...
Threw an old zyex A on last night.
No problem. Easy start with the bow. I'm going to give them a call.

Hi there! If you haven't contacted us already, feel free to drop me an email: [email protected] - I'm more than happy to talk strings!

This message goes out to everyone as well!

Ok, I got in touch with D'Addario. I tried calling and emailing last weekend, but forgot it was Presidents Day weekend and they wouldn't be open again until Tues. They got back to me on Wed. Great customer service. I spoke with them about the issues and told them my previous string choices. They sent me a replacement set in Medium tension this time (I originally bought lights). I got the new set in two days and put them on this evening. I must say that right out of the package they're ten times better. I'm incredibly pleased with the quick shipping on the new set and how open and responsive they were with all my concerns. Good customer service is scarce and strings are never returnable so I really appreciate them taking the time to make sure I got a quick replacement.

First I'll say that I'm pretty sure my original light set was defective. They were on my bass for a week and a half of heavy play at least 1-2 hours daily, more on my days off. They didn't mellow or calm down during this time, but seemed to get a bit worse. There was more clacking on the E, choking up worse in the upper register, and wouldn't bow at all.

The replacement, Medium Tension set that they sent is much, much better. The bow response is actually quite nice (despite my mediocre technique :). The upper register has a lot more clarity and the A is a LOT better. The A string still has a bit of a bell like quality when played open, but nothing compared to the original light set. So far, I'm digging the medium set. It's just a bit of an adjustment and a left hand and shoulder workout with the higher tension. They do have a nice 'bounce'? I don't know what to call it, but they're quick to respond and are a pretty balanced set.

All that being said, I do still think they need to take a look at those A strings. There's something of a metallic undertone as it sustains which was very pronounced in the light set, but can only be heard when played open in the medium set. I'm also very pleased with how they dealt with the situation. I'm going to record a short clip soon for a comparison.
