Details

I have another Stambaugh 5-string bolt-on bass on the way, and I think this one's going to be too far down the list to get an appropriate amount of use after that. Taking pictures of it still made my heart kind of hurt so I'm not sure this'll stay up and I'm definitely not in a rush to sell it. It'd be great to get into someone's hands who will use it a ton.

It'll be 10 years old in March. All of my fives from Chris are made to feel like a 5-string Stingray spacing-wise, so if you like that you'll like this! It has sort of a bolt-on Warwick vibe, but a little smoother. The bridge pickup is back further than a Stingray, so the "bite" / "growl" is more Jazz than MusicMan.

Wenge / bubinga neck with wenge fingerboard
*Ridiculous* mahogany body with spalted maple top

1.75" / 44.5 mm nut width
17.5 mm bridge spacing
34" scale

Hipshot Ultralite tuners w/D-tuner
Hipshot A bridge
Schaller straplocks

Nordstrand NJ5S split-coil Jazz neck pickup
Nordstrand BigSplitMan bridge pickup (with the back coil located in the 70's jazz position)
Aguilar OBP3 preamp - Volume / Blend / Passive Tone / T / M / B with switches for active / passive, mid shift, and coil split for the BigSplitMan

Currently strung with light gauge (.040-.120) DR Nickel Lo-Riders.

One thing to note is that I did play this thing a bunch, and between the oil finish and softer spalted maple top it collected a decent amount of wear. I've tried to picture as much as I could, but there's a decent amount of wear around where I rest my right-hand thumb, a medium-sized dent on the top horn, and then a bunch of little dings around the edges of the body. It's nothing that's noticeable from any further away than holding it, but it's definitely not a museum piece.

It'll come with a case. If I get my new bass from Chris before this sells I'll include the one he sends (a wooden TKL, generally) otherwise I'll ship it with a plastic Gator case. Add $100 to ship it in the States, open to shipping elsewhere. Local pickup's fine, too.

Here's a video clip from a while ago. I think this is before I swapped the bridge pickup, and it was a Nordstrand MM 5.4 quad-coil. Same general vibe though. At some point I'll probably make another video and run through the various sounds you can get out of it.

Oh, I forgot: It's light! 8.2 lbs!

edit: I just re-weighed it with the same luggage scale as before and it's reading 8.6 lbs this time. It's a cheap scale, so I'm going to try to find something else to weigh it with to make sure I'm being completely accurate here.

Sounds fantastic in that video - great playing too. One too many strings for me, though, doh! Long ago I had a Stambaugh and it was great though I stupidly had a neckthrough made with a pencil thin neck (before I realized that I can't do pencil thin necks.)

I was thinking about how I could adequately represent the shape / feel of the neck. All I can really say is "not too thick, not too thin, slightly asymmetrical, feels real good?"

What would be useful? I have a digital caliper and could take thickness measurements. How can I convey the shape, though?

vaguely reminiscent of Flea's tone on BSSM...great playing....what are all the controls? I assume one is splitting the rear coil...active on off?

This morning I made a quick video running through the pickup config options on this bass. I'm still sleepy and look bad / play crappy but the bass sounds nice, and I'm in the middle of packing for a move so this is as good as I'm going to get.

This is with the onboard preamp on but set flat, straight into my Symphony Desktop, no post processing or anything.

- blend in the middle, back pickup on full
- coil tap with both pickups
- back pickup full
- back pickup coil tap
- neck pickup
- neck pickup w/ tone rolled all the way off

I love Chris's basses. I have owned many. If there is any "trade" interest please let me know.
