Coming back here to say that I now think my compression problem was not the Tone Capsule. I tried four different sets of pickups and three different preamps in it, and it still sounds compressed. Even when I play it unplugged it sounds compressed. I may try different strings. Or I may just play one of my other twenty basses.....

Can owners / former owners weigh in on how these basses sound in passive mode? Do they sound and feel convincing as a passive instrument?

Not too hot and farty. More like a GZR, less like a model P. I run my pickups really far away from the strings and it helps with the sound IMO. Neck shims will make a difference in the floppiness of the strings.

All my basses are BEAD and I gig with a p bass a lot, I get compliments on its tone pretty often

Same experience for me. I have three of them. I try to keep the lower strap connection on all the time to prevent wear and tear. One of them has been wallowed out enough that the rubber washers are required to keep it on. The other two seem to be holding up pretty well.

I like them enough that I'll get a replacement if they wear completely out.

Anyway….

The Roland bass guitar synth systems were way too expensive(plus the tech was in its infancy), and although I was already using pedals, they really weren’t outfitted for bass use, plus nothing came close to a synth sound. I took the plunge(even with having hardly any keys experience)and got the affordable Sequential Circuits Pro-One, their monophonic answer to a Mini-Moog. Eventially, after going in a different musical direction, I sold it(wish I hadn’t, they now fetch stupid money), bass guitar pedals got better, and now I’ve gone that route, getting back into those sounds. I guess there’s a newer version available of the P-1.

Nice! That's a great backstory. I'd really like an old Sequential or an older Moog, but this one was a deal I couldn't pass up and it does what I need it to do! Almost went with a Bass Station II, but this one struck me for some reason. It's definitely addictive, and I've already been looking at getting a 2nd one.. Probably something polyphonic next time. The Messenger is GREAT for simple, aggressively-phat bass lines, though!

If you have the budget you should just have a new pre installed. It only takes 1 poor connection to cause issues. It’s guaranteed going to happen again. If you are intent on saving the old one have a good tech or electronics guy go over every last bit of it to make sure connections and motherboard are all good. Pretty much your best options.

I think the Delanos or Turners would be your best bets. I had a turner multicoil MM and it was clear as heck with distortion. The Delano JMVC's are just a great pup in the mix and take distortion great as well.

No, it’s time to lower the pickup a little. It’s a little closer to the strings now, and that usually causes warble.

I play a few inches from the end as it’s just more comfortable there; no matter the string choice. My thought is if you’re playing strictly acoustically, maybe there is a difference in sound production, but plugged in to an amp and it doesn’t seem to have much of difference one way or the other. I would venture to say also, if you’re a tall person, the end of the fb is more comfortable. Average to small person will find it easier a few inches higher. Pick your poison…

I’ve seen a lot of what Khn has done over the years (or at least the stuff he couldn’t get pulled when they broke), and he has always used a white Fender coiled cord on his guitar. With all those pedals and the looper, it’s irrelevant and more of a looks thing, but he’s no stranger to plugging straight into an amp, I’m sure. His tone doesn’t hurt my ears but it’s pretty bright.

The EMTECH EM 6600 is good stuff and has potential - better HVLP rig than brush or wipe. Since shuttering my last commercial space, I am working on the small and quiet these days and avoiding compressors. Still working with Lacquer rattle to get through a couple of jobs that I have to hide some patchworks. More on the EM 6600 later. I'll probably seek out a low noise compressor or mini rig. But my actual goal is to perfect the in mold finish and recent lay-up/pulls are encouraging. Preferences is light sand polish. Anyway, see how the next ones go!

From distilling and squeezing classic amps into stomp friendly boxes to getting that perfect chorus, the ever elusive perfect distortion, delay or reverb to getting that once unobtainable studio polish it seems all things are ever more possible with those once humble boxes. Add to that the expanding complexity and rising cost of so many multieffects that seem to be either a eureka find or a mind bending all too often mind numbing conundrum ~ it's no wonder we so often turn to a one trick pony that does the ever amazing 'trick" espeically when they do such unusual often unthinkable tricks.

From the standpoint of someone who rebuilds old Kays almost every day of the year: no matter what you do to it, your old Kay is never going to sound like a 200 year old fully carved Italian bass. Changing to different strings will likely make more of a sound difference than major structural modifications.

That said, if (when) major repairs need to be done, I'm generally in line with Greg in that I'll change the bridge height / overstand from the factory issue 135mm to approx. 150-160, depending upon the bass and the player IF everything else is structurally solid and a good candidate.

Turn off your phone.

My current DD is a 2015 Infiniti Q50, and it's my favorite car I've ever owned. It's the 3.7L V6 version. I bought it with 50K miles on it, have had it for 6 1/2 years and have only needed to do regular maintenance on it.
