Double Bass Plywood Bass Restoration

I think I found a solution for the button on another thread here.

A true traditional button graft is not really practical on a laminated bass. However, I know of 2 ways to restore the function of the button on a laminated bass. The first is to install a "false" button. This is a thin maple strip about the same thickness as the detached button that is fitted to a channel cut in the spruce top block and glued between the top block and the inside surface of the back just below the area where the button broke off. The new false button performs the same function as the original button, and the detached button is glued behind it. The neck heel has to be shortened by the thickness of the maple strip when setting the neck and the false button is trimmed after the neck is glued in.

Schecter Guitar Research Riot-4 Question

I'm jumping in about eight months after this thread kinda petered out, but I have my eye on a Riot-4 Session, so I"m wondering how this story ended. I've done enough research to know that this is an 18v system with both active pickups and an active 3-band preamp and a single volume control with a blend pot. That's all right up my alley, but I already have a roomful of basses. So at $425 in 2026, is it worth it? It is said to be in excellent condition with a working truss rod and includes a Roadrunner gig bag.

Adam Neely / Sungazer Plus live at the Blue Note NYC

I just saw that the other day. I'm aware of Adam Neely as a YT personality, but that was as the extent of my knowledge - though, I used to play with one of Adam's former Berklee classmates. I just don't really get into that many YT music discussion type channels.

I was really impressed with the band, the music, the musicians, and the whole bass package. I'll have to Adam out more.

Electrical cabling question for stage setup

Hi -

I ran into a problem a stage setup problem the other day with my band: I had electrical hum that I couldn't get rid of!

My usual pedalboard does not make noise, at least none that I hear at home or in practice. The usual "ground-lift" button tricks were not working at all, cables all plugged in, and no loose ends. The last pedal in the chain is a Two Notes Cab M+. I didn't have a ton of time to troubleshoot, so I tried XLS from the Genzler Maggelan preamp and I didn't have the buzz. But the sound without the Cab simulation was not what I wanted, so I plugged in my trusty Tech 21 Acoustic FlyRig and played my heart out with no buzz.

Oh, didn't you know?

All of the cool kids are using Impulse Responses taken from the best speakers, mic'd in rooms with the worst mains hum, to make their cab sims sound like the authentically live experience.

Nickel alloy (not plated) strings 45-105?

Dunlop Hybrid Nickels maybe? Products - Strings - Bass - Hybrid Nickel - Dunlop

I have mixed feelings about those strings, though. They feel amazing. Plush texture, not too stiff, not too spongy. However... they're not the best for drop tunings, their output is surprisingly low (too timid and polite for even generic rock; I think it's because it has a pure nickel outer wrap rather then nickel plated), and they went dead on me after just one gig. But my body chemstry seems to kill Dunlops very quickly. Others on TalkBass say they get good life out of them.

Lessons learned from sponsoring an outdoor gig

#1 requirement for an outdoor show - a tent that covers the entire band area. No tent, no play.

We played a backyard party with no cover and, sure enough, during the second song it started to 'rain'. Not much at all, a drop here and there, but still, equipment had to be covered while we waited for this 'rain' to stop. It never did.

After waiting a few hours, we packed up and left.

Guidance Buying New Bass

That is a good idea. Any specific models that are good for

That is a good idea. Any specific models that are good for grunge/metal/punk?
In grunge and punk fenders are almost universal, extremely popular for that. Metal less so but youve got Frank Bello, Steve Harris and a lot of dudes who play fender replicas like charvel / jackson type basses. There is no better bass for ANY music than a good P or J bass trust me Im saving you time and money hahaha. And yes I have loads of experience doing heavy music on fenders.

EBS Valve Drive

I have been using this EBS drive pedal for a couple years and I love it. From nice warmth to scorched earth is what it does. I do not prefer the distortion of non real tube pedals for my own preference, they sound electronicy( I just made that word up) or sizzly. Sizzle fry - that’s a good description. Some may be looking for that but I just want a bit xtra warmth or tube growl/ saturation. This is a great pedal for that. I would like to compare it to some other popular pedals like Aguilar or micro tubes but I don’t have a real strong urge to do that because Iam satisfied with this pedal. It can be hard to A/B stuff because you have to get it all in the same room. This pedal simply accentuates my tone in a positive manner. Takes an already great sounding amp and flavors it in a positive manner. Before I got it reading reviews that people talked negatively about it kind of clouded my view of it as too nasty sounding. I’ve found for my personal preference that I prefer the treble/ mid /bass set flat, I believe that’s where they got it wrong? On this pedal flat is Bass and treble 0, mid 10. Sais it right in the manual. I feel people do not realize that about the tone setting on this pedal? At first I had a love/ hate relationship with the pedal. After I set the tone flat I was better able to get the nice valve tone accompaniment I was seeking using just the volume and gain controls wich seem to be for me volume 11-12:00 gain 9-11:00 o clock. Iam usually just playing alone at home these days and not in a band so I usually have my rig at a pretty low volume unless no one is home. Last night I got a very pleasing and muscular tone out of my SVT2 pro using the EBS valve drive pedal. It was bedtime and I stayed up too late because I had a great tone and it sounded so pleasing I didn’t want to quit playing. I am a fan of the EBS Valve drive pedal. True tube tone that makes all tube amps sound even better IMO. It’s definately worth checking out if you are looking to add an additional option of tube warmth to your tone instead of just your amp. I play rock/ hard rock/ metal and I like a mild tube growl tone that’s present in most heavier music but not the massively overdriven bass tones of modern metal. I loved the muscle it added to my SVT tone. It was a nice accompaniment that made my mind smile. I have also used it with my Trace Elliot and Mesa Big Block with the same pleasing results. It’s a keeper.
