Bergantino's Vertical 410!!!!!

Almost a year later, this is still my favorite gig cabinet ever.

Caveat: I never did a direct A/B with my beloved NV610 -- this would be too logistically difficult to do at a gig, or even in gig conditions (I'm a condo dweller). But the NV410T gives me NV610 magic in a MUCH more gig-friendly package: it's just as tall, and the reduced weight is invaluable. Just as importantly, the narrow footprint allows me to bring it to every gig, even when it's more cab than I need (I know how to operate a volume knob)!

So far the 410 has easily provided all the volume I need even in loud conditions. The acid test will be this Saturday, as I have an outdoor gig with my "stoopid loud rock band" where I'd normally bring the NV610. The NV410 should be sufficient, but the bottom line is that after 20 years I'm finally done competing with those idiots (drummer and guitarist): if they don't care about bass in the mix then I won't either. They went from being my busiest band to my least busy band in part because of their volume. Post-pandemic, bars seem to have less tolerance for that nonsense.

Complaining aside: the NV410T is perfect for me. I'm sure I'd also love the NV312T, but I preferred NV610 to NV412 so I'm glad I jumped on the 410. :)

Catalinbread DLS / DLS Deluxe

Hey there low Enders. I bought a DLS regular pedal and absolutely love it on a certain setting: Tr 9 o’clock, Mid 1 o’clock , Bass 9 o’clock and pre 1 o’clock. It seems to do some magic that I can only really describe as “more” but with a bit of grit.

I loved it so much that I got the Deluxe version thinking that it’d be even better. I figured I’d start with the same settings / tone as the regular DLS. I just can’t see to get parity in that punchy tone. I reached out to the manufacturer and they said its more or less the same circuit.

Just wondered if anyone had experience / thoughts

Nordstrand Poly Vox

This one has Poly Vox pups into two Lusithand NFP Single preamps, each with their own output.

I've had this bass for 2 months now. I've played my other basses very little since. Each time I do play a different bass, I think: oh yeah, I like this bass too. But when I switch back, I start to think I can sell all the others.

Last Thursday, for the first time since I've had it, I didn't bring it to rehearsal (as an intentional experiment.) That won't happen again. It just sits perfectly in the mix. And with the dual filter preamps the range of tones available is incredible.

Critical error sanding/truss rod

Perfect execution. That's a goal. But rarely reality.
Well perfection as a goal for the first build is not a wise target.
I don't I really mean that... except it's an actual real problem in my life. Not starting projects that I know will be functional but not perfect. Or finishing projects and then living with a lingering fear that somewhere down the line it will fail and then I won't know how to fix it.

My first ever build was a neck through guitar that was designed around a double cut lp. As a confident engineering student I designed and made a double acting truss rod myself. I was surprised how well the instrument turned out. Not perfect, but nice for a first try.

Well, after 2 months or so the welds in the truss rod gave in and I had to blow up the neck. I was certain that a heated knife was a great way to remove the fingerboard. Back then the internet wasn't filled with the wealth of information we have today.

Anyways the board removal went less than ideal and I ended up removing a lot of wood from the neck shaft. I got it back together with a thick new 9 mm fingerboard, some maple strips to widen the neck shaft, an off the shelf truss rod and some carbon strengtheners. The guitar is somewhat playable, but the neck is too narrow and definitely not as pretty as the original was.

That was 20 something years ago. And I have yet to reach perfect execution in anything I do. Maybe one day...

Working blend pot with series/parallel switch?

Hi all,

I've been working on this for a little bit, and I think I may have a solution, using a 5PDT switch. Please see my attached wiring layout made in DIYLC, and the corresponding wiring analysis output. FWIW, the wiring output is the exact same as the output for the previous version of this I had made but it had separate blend knobs, one for the parallel side and one for the series side, as wired as indicated in post here: Working blend pot with series/parallel switch? | Page 2 | TalkBass.com I have run the ungrounded parallel blend as configured on my jazz bass.

I'm planning on testing this in the future, but if anyone gives it a go I'm happy to hear your results.

Feel free to ignore the series/parallel switches for the humbuckers. I'm just planning ahead for my next build. :D

Need advice how to manage first band. Do I try finding another band or try to fix this one?

From the OP, 16 is a good age to start but to be fair, a lot of it is going to be the blind leading the blind. Dont take that the wrong way, we were likely all in that boat then.
2 ways you deal with that.

1) fumble on and get fed up further down the line and move on
2) I'm against dictatorial bandleaders mostly but when you are more organised and purposeful than the others, you have to cut the others loose Heard the term, ' musical differences'...this is an example..and these generally cause splits.

Dont be sentimental about 'mates' who can't hack it one way or another, get rid.

Or...and this gets my vote, join a 'functioning' outfit that is working bars clubs etc or whereever you are aloud to work.

Or join a music program where the curriculum teaches you how to get playing and out of the garage in a more professional setting.

P pickups for very very classic P tone

Funny that Geddy went to his 72 J because of more bottom than the 4001 in his opinion.

I have always thought a J with both pickups on had more lows and highs than a Precision. It makes sense to me that he would think the J has more low end.

I am actually wondering if perception is the real issue. A P solo'd has a big midrange. The low end is actually pretty modest. I think this is why they work so well with flats. The flats enhance the lows while the big midrange actually provides the clarity that lets it be heard in a mix without a lot of top end.

I was the house bassist for the jam in Highwood and I'd brought my Dingwall Z3.
Another bassist (hi Tom!) was there with his Alembic Series 1.5 (Series 1 with Series 2 electronics).

A young band wanted to get up and play a few songs, but their bassist hadn't brought a bass.
That struck me as an indicator of poor planning and newb status, so I didn't feel like either my Dingwall or Tom's Alembic was a great idea...both in terms of complexity and liability.

We were rescued by a third bassist, who offered up his PJ.
After that night, I always brought my mutt P-Bass: loanable, dead-simple, and very playable.

SKB Europe Are Great! Stingray Case Handle Epic Support

Well, that's above and beyond!

I have a MusicMan ABS stingray case that lost its handle during a flight.
(The clasp next to it is funky now, too, but that's no biggee.)

I searched all the dif sites for a replacement handle with the right type and size of mounts.
No luck.

So I asked Ernie Ball UK if they have a replacement handle.
Reply: Discontinued item, so no can do.

So I asked Ernie Ball USA if they have a replacement handle.
Reply: Discontinued item, so no can do.

So I asked if the supplier could help.
Reply: Case made by SKB but no info on the handle.

So I asked SKB UK if they have a handle.
Reply: No spares

So I asked SKB-Europe if they have a handle.
Reply: Need to know the model ref. and they can help!

So I searched everywhere to no avail.

Meanwhile, SKB Europe helper comes back and says she will try to get the info for me and arrange a handle FOC.
She was able to track it down through the build specs from SKB USA.

Its an HD-01 and they are sending one to me.

Once you know the model it is possible to track them down on line, but not in the UK that I can find.

Anyway - [email protected] is the place to go and they couldn't have done more to sort me out on a product supplied to another company.

Hi from the piedmont NC

Hi folks, new member, old bassist. Music has been a neglected hobby of mine while I spent a few decades in a misguided attempt at being a working professional. I've found some folks in my area who play bluegrass and roots music, and I'm getting more serious about learning and playing. When I was a teenager, I took jazz bass instruction and discovered Paul Chambers, Jaco Pastorius, and Stanley Clarke.

I have an old student model upright bass -- which is currently down for repairs -- and a couple of acoustic bass guitars that I bring to acoustic-only jams and bluegrass events. I'm a better tech than I am a player, so I love to talk about instrument building, repair, and modification, along with performance tech.

And the even older models had LR Baggs preamps, I think? Mine has the 13-pin Roland output, not that I'll ever use it. A 5 string version would be nice, but I would probably string it with a high C because Dingwall has spoiled most other low Bs for me :)
Yep a high C was my plan! Though I will say that the low B on the A5 I tried wasn't bad at all (apart from the general tone being kinda "meh" compared to my A4, the B was at least clear and balanced which is somewhat rare from a 34" scale).

Sadly Godin stopped paying RMC for piezo/preamp parts already delivered, hence the new electronics. Hopefully not a sign the company is going downhill as I own and love a handful of Godins.

I do use the Synth output on mine all the time! If you are ever looking for some fun textures, look for used Boss SY-1000- not only does it have a bunch of real-time modeled synths (no latency), but also a triggered synth section (yes latency), modeled instruments, and a full multi-FX section, plus it has a MIDI out that you can plug in to external synths to play (though admittedly the tracking/latency for MIDI output is not the greatest with bass, much nicer for guitar).
