Yes. Play it for what it is. I have a Sears Silvertone from 1975 when I was 13 years old that was a birthday gift. I play it for what it is.

The stock pickup in a Jaguar H bass is a superlative passive MM design, especially after you ditch the "guitar" controls, pots and tone cap and rewire it using a '62 P-bass schematic and component values. Now, when I want minimal noise and even more flexibility, I have rewired one of my projects with an EMG MMCSX for great tone, quiet operation, and versatility.

My only other experience with EMG HZ pickups was my 5-string party bass that I got over a decade ago. The HZ's were stock pickups. To me they sounded muddy so within a year I had upgraded that bass to full EMG actives, including an EXB in the circuit, for better tone, more versatility, clarity, and lowest noise possible.

Set it for arco and work it out. Do not let it become a hang up. There are enough real problems with the double bass without inventing more.

Yes. I have a Nordy Mustang pickup in a 30-inch travel bass. It has the double poles per string of a P-pickup, and has a little more wire on it than a stock Mustang pickup, but of course with the smaller bobbins a little less than a P-pickup. It is a best of both worlds pickup. On my bass it is very versatile, especially with GHS Balanced Nickel strings to get both old school and newer tones. I can nail Bill Wyman's tone from the 1969-1971 era. But it is more flexible than that with a Seymour Duncan 5-string stack J neck pickup with the blade and plain cover wired into the bridge position; great balance, versatility, flexibility, and tonality with standard PJ or JJ wiring with the Nordy vintage Mustang pickup. Since they are both configured as "drop-ins" the polarity is the same, so all you have to do is take the hot leads, wire them in to their respective pot lugs, ground properly and go.

I used Italia 4" leather straps for years, and I liked them a lot. Lately I've been using a ZERO-G Pro strap and I like it even better. Doesn't soak up sweat or discolor like a leather/suede strap, and makes my heavy bass feel good even on the longest gigs. And no animals had to die for it.

actually you were right Chris. I taped a straight extension to the Krivo tongue thing with a straight piece of metal. This extended both the length of the entire dual locked area and compensated for the extra open space at the end of the fingerboard. Seems plenty robust.
Anybody have any Metal G string suggestions that would work with the Mag but be considerably less twangy then the Weich?
Also, having the option to go full electric on this little bass is fantastic. I am looking at pedals all of a sudden...

I use Superfex solo E/A/D with Innovation Braided G (you have to raise the pole a bit on the G but it works, and not twangy).

I used Dominant solos for years and really liked them, but if you think Superflexible solos sound ‘dinky’ (not on my bass, they sound full and lush), then you probably will not like the Dominant solos.

Totally agree Andy. Anywhere else on the board and I'd have had zero chance of any kind of successful outcome. The video capacitor removal technique is probably better because it doesn't use any heat, thus avoiding my mini disasters.
Anyhow, I hope my efforts in repeating (kind of) the video fix might help others avoid a wasteful complete board replacement with the employ of a competent technician.
(I've also resurrected a beautiful pair of gummed up 1995 Royd Doublet speakers this week, so I'm on a roll).

Update after 3 months?

Looks pretty interesting. I've been using the newest Pi Stomp firmware and have given a few NAM A2 models a try for my guitar and they're really good so far. The bass side hasn't caught up yet, but I'm looking forward to updating some of my patches once models start rolling out.

I expect the v3 enclosure size to jump down another size or two, unless feature creep asserts itself. Stereo output is one obvious possibility. At that point I'll be looking at harmonizing all the enclosure graphics a bit...LOL.

Nah, nothing as cool as that. It's kind of hard to explain.

Maybe think of an obtuse comedy act done to a soundtrack of noise. For example we have an upcoming show where we put together a tribute band to our band since we haven't played this venue in a while. The tribute band has most of the members of the main band and we'll be "covering" our own songs, but purposefully differently and in some cases poorly approximating those songs. People are super hyped for it because that's the kind of weird nonsense that we tend to do and for whatever reason we have this underground cult following. Most of this show will be building to a bit where we announce Tom Selleck has died in a helicopter crash and we bring him back by playing a medley of TV show themes from the Magnum PI era (including the Magnum PI theme). I'm trying to convince an Indian friend of mine with a wicked moustache to waltz into the bar at the right moment in Magnum PI costume, since he's the only man I know with a sufficiently epic stache. He'll be the resurrected Tom Selleck. Resurrected as an Indian dude. I've almost convinced him that it's a good idea....

Apologies for resurfacing this thread, did you ever find any information or schematics for those HAZ 18V preamps?

Honestly the schematic itself isn't hugely important, if you have found / know where to find the EQ curve plots, it's fairly easy to design a circuit / modify some of the "close-enough" schematics online to match it. I'd be happy to collaborate on this or share my results if you want.

I have a '98 Roscoe Beck V with a few issues. Even though they're different than what's in this original thread, I figured this may be the best place to start finding solutions:

1. The Volume pot kills the output when rolled down to 8-9. I figured it was either the most extreme audio taper ever, or it was a bad pot. It was reading 5k ohms (when wired in), so I replaced it with a pot that I had laying around (making sure it metered 250k). Problem still exists. It's basically on 10, or no volume at all.

My IV does not have this type of problem. It is smooth all the way cutting volume predictably. Weird that changing the pot didn't do anything. You can't really measure pot when wired to microphones at it measures resistance of mics and this also depends on wiring. 250K should be right value however.

You have checked if this happens in all different configurations and does pulling the tone knob up to reduce the volume of neck pickup affect this behaviour at all?

You still need this? I could open my IV from 2005. I have actually modded it so that there is a 3-way switch to change the cap, but I know what is the OG cap. Works very well for me. I think there is quite big difference in sound especially with the bridge pickup. Like if I just fret some note and change switch while note is ringing I can clearly hear difference. Basically with the bridge pickup position 1. parallel humbucking = most nasal 2. coil tap = nasal, but not so much than in parallel humbucking 3. series humbucking = clearly most bass. The tone position affects a lot of these basic characteristics and can make these sound more or less similar.

Btw great basses and very stable neck compared to my CS Jazz bass..

I had the same experience with Hyper Luminal. In my non-scientific A/B test with similar settings, it was more noisy than Cali76 (v1). That's why I sold it.

My opinion/theory: This pedal was designed with loud and hard-hitting players in mind because input sensitivity is relatively low. Since my signal was not that hot, I had to crank the compression pretty high to make it react – which raised the signal noise.

Any compressor will highlight signal noise if you are limiting strong signals and boosting soft signals. Noise is also a "soft signal", so the more extreme you go, the worse it gets.

If you like the compressor, you might seek a balance with more mild settings - like a different threshold / compression rate, and more clean blend. Or, you can put a noise gate after that to mask the problem. With or without compression, I like keeping my ISP Deci-Mate on the board because you'll never know what you might encounter in mystery venues (EMI, dirty power, etc).

After opening mine (for the first time in many years) I did notice that the foam rubber sheets used for insulation and "rattle control" have seriously deteriorated. They are falling apart and I will have to find a replacement material. So after seeing this, it occurs to me, maybe yours has also deteriorated, perhaps to the point that some portions of the EQ board are shorting on something else? One of the pots or switches, or the shield can?

Anyway... I'll see if I can come up with a rudimentary schematic from the PC board. I'm pretty sure it is identical to the EQ found in some Ibanez guitars of the era, such as the AR500, for example.

So glad i came across this thread, ivrecently purchased a 1982 MC924 in polar white in great condition...except the foam in the rear which is now sorted. I too found a green wire not conected to anything and it puzzled me for days as the bass is fully functional in pasive, active and all controls do what theyre supposed to. Thankyou so mutch for this info, cheers
