never a blood hound but i've had a bassett and a beagle. you gotta keep scent hounds entertained or they will entertain themselves in a way that you don't want them to. tracking is always fun for them.
if i had a yard i would get me a bloodhound.

I've never owned a scenthound, but I've worked with them (and owned sighthounds).
Training and activities are key to a happy and well adjusted dog family.
Just remember that hounds have a different mindset, in terms of training and work, then "working dogs" like sheepdogs, protection dogs, etc. Not that hounds don't work - they do. But they work differently.
"Working dog" breeds (as I'm describing them - border collies are a great example) work cooperatively with people. "Tell me what to do, and I'll do it!! Got anything else for me to do???!!"
Hounds were bred to work fairly independently. "Gimme a scent, I'll track down the critter, and you follow along". It's a different mindset, for both dog and owner. For specifics, I'd encourage you to find a good Hound forum. A lot of those folks will be hunters, and training their dogs for tracking/hunting, but you'll learn a lot about how to work with your hound, even if you're not using him for that purpose.
