With all the recent interest in modded Lakland 55-01's, I thought I'd get into the act. And why not? With standard soapbar routing, 5-knob configuration, and one of the best necks in the business, the 55-01 is a natural.

This however, is NOT your daddy's 55-01. This is one godzilla of a J-Bass.

The pickups are Nordstrand Big Splits and the preamp is a Sadowsky 2-band w/VTC.

Tone wise, this thing is almost out of control. HUGE sound. Edgy. Raw. People talk about a Jazz on steroids, this thing has steroids, HGH and everything else Balco had in the kitchen.

Monster Bass. I can't WAIT to get this one to rehearsal over the weekend!

Iota, Dan Lakin needs to give you a call! Lakland should seriously consider putting a version of your bass into production. I think it would be a really hot bass.:bassist:

Cool bass! Since seeing the first of these threads, I'd pictured one almost exactly like that, with the Nordstrand/Sadowsky combination--maybe with Big Singles rather than Big Splits, and maple rather than rosewood board, but close enough! ;-)

Hmmm, Very intriguing... You've definately given me more to think about, Iota...

I had a Bart NTMB 3-band EQ dropped in my 55-01. I wanted to get rid of the excessively brassy stock tones, & that DID accomplish that. But, love still eludes me.

I know Capnsandwich just had some Nords dropped into HIS, but used a Bart NTMB 3-band EQ.

I find you dropping in a Sad 2-Band w/ VTC circuit VERY interesting. Now that I've lived w/ both a Bart NTMB, and a Sad 2-band pre... I can say I like the way the Sad pre works better.

But, I'm sort of hesitant to spend anymore money trying to tweak this bass.
