Geddy Lee's Teardrop

I ran across this photo of Geddy and his quiver. I was looking at the teardrop bass, which Google seems to suggest is a Fender. Everything I click on, including Talkbass, says Fender. The headstock does not look like Fender. It does have P and J pickups.

Of course he is playing what looks like a Precision, except for the headstock.

Has he ever said what it was?

The teardrop was a P-bass. The headstock was cut down too, and the J pickup added. He's said that the modifications ruined the sound.

He's playing a rickenbacker in that photo, looks like a 3001.

Im pretty sure it was his original Fender P bass that he had modified.

He said he chopped up his old P, put a treble pick up on it, and painted it. The headstock also resembles a Fender headstock that was hacked up.

Wow, it was a P-BASS on the first album!?!?!?! That's good stuff. I really need to research this guy's gear a little more, I've been stealing his licks for 30 years.

I hear the vaults at Mercury Records have some dusty "Caress of Steel" outtakes that feature Geddy on the oh-so-rare-and-coveted 6 string acoustic picolo bass.

The Teardrop bass was originally a '68 Sunburst Precision (or a Precision he bought in '68). I read two Rush biographies (Visions, Contents Under Pressure); it was in one of those.

Many times I've heard that it was a P bass on the first album, however I'm sorry, every time I listen to it I hear the Ric loud and clear. Maybe its just his amp settings or somthing.
