I read an article in Guitar Player about 30 years ago where Geddy lamented chopping up a nice Fender Precision. He said it changed the tone, and not for the better.

I listened again and I guess I can hear a bit of "P".
Geddy must have some hardcore fingernails, when mine break off, the "geddy tone" just dissappears.

No, it is just his style. Ever notice how he gets a similar (not identical, but similar) sound out of all of the basses he has played over the years even though he has also switched up his gear quite often? So much more of one's sound is in the fingers than people seem to be willing to believe (at least in my opinion).

That white Rick is now owned by Les Claypool.
