Samick 5-String Bass

Well, I found a relatively good deal for a 5 string bass on Craigslist(well, it appears to be a good deal), so I was wondering if you could help me in identifying the model(I believe the brand is discontinued, so information was hard to come by). It is a Samick bass.

well that looks familiar:

yours has the same beveled tops, so it is probably a late 90's ABILINE, OR ARTIST SERIES. it would say on the headstock sticker. MIK cheapie...

I paid 80 bucks for it a year or so ago, and although it sounded good, it was just like the price dictated ---junk as I could not get the action low enough to suit me so I sold it for a better 5 string.

Well, if you don't know about Samick basses, chances are that you'll find something about it that you really like. You're not swayed by the name on the headstock, or that viewpoint - which suggests you don't need super low quality action.

I bet that if you like the way it feels and sounds, that you'll coax some awesome tones out of it.

I'd say it's worth $130. Super deal. If you can get it for $100 cash then you've got a playable 5 string in hand for a super duper deal...

Well, if the issue about the action is really impeding my playing ability, I could replace the bridge to one of the adjustable variety.

Thanks for your input. I'm currently leaning towards making the purchase, unless anyone else on these boards has had an extremely bad experience with Samick 5 string basses(Artistic series, I was provided with a picture of the headstock today).

David - I may have been taken a little out of context in my other post- -- I did not mean you should NOT buy it.

Mine was a really well put together unit with a good passive sound and a B string you could hear.

But it WAS cheap, and I never could get used to the action and string spacing, so I sold it to pay for another 5Stringer that I felt more comfortable playing.

here's me playing that samick on a simple song if you wanna hear what it sounds like. take in to account this was recorded using my camcorder mics.

Managed to get the price down to $100. It was in quite good condition as well, with a relatively new pair of strings on it. It's quite comfortable to play as well, and sounds quite good(although the J pickup is a tad noisy). It will do quite nicely as my only bass until my Traben comes in (I managed to sell my starter bass for parts for $90, so I buffered most of the cost of the Samick, which is good).

BUT, it WAS junk and nothing more to me than a cheap beginner bass. TB has rules about bashing basses unless you personally own one, and I did and I'm bashing it.

to get it "up to par" would have cost more than the thing was worth ( new pickups/bridge ), that was my point.

For what its worth, I've got a Samick custom 4-string bass that I bought for 300 out of a pawn shop. It had super low sweet ass action. And it came with Dimarzio Ultra jazz pickups. It sounds great. I know it's not the same model as the one you're looking at, but I thought I'd throw out some info on a different samick model, maybe give some idea on quality. Or not.

Is Samick still making instruments?

After their major corporate implosion and cessation of Korean manufacturing some years ago, I haven't heard a thing about them. They were supposedly going to Chinese manufacturing, but I've never heard their name come up since.
