What year fender Precision is this?

Played by Mike Gordon at last night's Phish show. First time I've ever seen him play something besides his Modulus 5 string. Looks like an older model, I can see the screw holes for the tug bar and bridge cover. Anyone have any idea how old it might be?

Hard to pin it down w/just a photo, but between the matching headstock and the appearance of the tortoise I'd guess 60's some time. If you want to research, you can find out when candy apple red was offered, when the tug bar was below the strings, etc. There's not a lot to hang your hat on w/Precisions that didn't change much over the years, but this board has a number of experts who may be helpful. I've never seen Mike play a 4 before either but hey, it's great fun!

Judging by the logo, it's pre-CBS. Beyond that, I cannot say.

Well, P Basses did not come with matching headstocks (except a protoype or two).

Though the bass in question apparently isn't one, the early 80's P Bass Specials did have matching headstocks in CAR, LPB, and White.

Hard to tell - I'm going to guess Pre CBS - maybe a 60-64 (mainly because he could definitely afford it) judging by the headstock decal and the dots appear to be clay because they're so hard to see...

can't really tell if the headstock matches or not, but I'd guess its a refin if it is the same color as the body

I know, I have one. A white one (1982).
But clearly a different era, and different kinda P Bass.

I'm thinking it's a refined 60's bass. I can see what appears to be the aluminum shield sticking out from under areas of the shrunken tort guard.

IMO, it's a '62-'64

Could be a 60's body with a 80 P-bass Special neck on it. Looks to me like the neck has gold tuners, which were standard on the P-bass special in 80-82.

nope. those are reverse tuners and the lighting makes the m look gold.
