I've given up on understanding the math behind this (did at one point but forgot what I learned :) ), so I'd appreciate a simple answer to this question:

If a combo says you can connect a total speaker load of 4-ohms minimum, and it comes with a 4 ohm 15" speaker - can I ADD an 8 ohm 2X10 cabinet without frying anything? Manual "recommends" using one 4 ohm speaker, or two 8 ohm. Says nothing about adding an 8 ohm to the 4 ohm

4 ohm plus 8 ohm (in parallel) = 2.66 ohms. So it's not going to work: you get either 2.66 in parallel, which is not safe with that amp; or 12 ohms in series, which would draw a lot less power from the amp. Best bet in your case would be to replace the internal speaker with an 8 ohm.

Is there and advantage to buying an 8 Ohm Cab over a 4 Ohm (or vice versa? Will the 8 give you more versatility later?

There is an advantage to buying an 8 ohm cab-you can add another 8 ohm cab later. The disadvantage is you can only get a maximum of 225 watts out of your GK instead of 380. This is not much of a disadvantage if it's a good cabinet and you use it for smaller rooms and it can actually carry that room.

For example-can you get away with using a 1x12, 8 ohm cabinet for your smaller gigs? Some may, some maybe not. Most 1x12 speakers, although rated for 300 watts or so won't actually safely handle all that power in the low end. But, if the 8 ohm cabinet was a 2x12 or 4x10, then, not only would it put out more sound because of the increase in speaker cone area, the drivers would be operating in a safer range than one single driver would. This is all assuming they are high quality components used in a properly designed cabinet.

So, when I see guys in their first band buying a 1x12 combo or cabinet and expecting it to be really loud because its 300 watts, I feel sorry for them. In the real world it won't cut it for the volume levels these guys play at at gigs, or even practicing as a band. They may be able to actually hear themselves, but their speaker is constantly running at the upper limit of its capability and will fail soon.

An experienced player who plays at a lower volume, knows how to sensibly use his eq controls and lets the PA do all the work (if there is one available that can cut it) and doesn't try to fill the stage with a huge rumble might get away with using a 1x12 cabinet in a rock group.

So, in my opinion, of whether you should get an 8 ohm cabinet or not depends on your needs. Gtting a 1x12 4 ohm cabinet for example still puts you in the same boat except, now you can't add any more speakers.
