i can't believe this new bass. i mean honestly. i'm the most tried and true fender supporter and lover, but this new essex i just got is a really good deal.

of course, theres some of those high-end appointments that are missing, and the pickguard screws are installed crooked, but overall, this bass plays really nice. ...and for 135 bones which includes shipping... you really can't beat it.

i've played my fair share of low end yamahas, peaveys, and squiers. this thing beath the pants off of the others. and i havent even plugged it in yet.

I just got one of those in white. It was a blem, so I got it for a little over $100 with shipping. Sounds just like a PJ to me. But yeah, it's not the most expensive feeling bass ever made. Still, it's miles above anything else you can buy in that price range. Good quiet pickups, solid Fender sound...everything but perfect playability ;)

I can see you're a smart guy. I totally agree. What's the point? I hear about guys putting Nordstrands on SX's. NORDSTRANDS??? Sheesh!

I have to ask as I've wondered about this a long time. Obviously the distributer is making at least 40% on his markup from the manufacturer. What do you suppose it actually costs to build one of the basses? Remember, the manufacturer is marking up at least 30% to the distributer. You think about 20 bucks total for parts and labor to build one and ship it from the factory?

sorry to sound skeptical (even though I am)...but please elaborate to validate your claim.

I used to have a Yamaha RBX170 that, quite frankly, played AS GOOD as any bass I've ever owned (played the PAINT OFF IT for 3 years!)...the action was truthfully 1.5mm @ the 12th fret E-string with NO BUZZ anywhere!...and quite a comfy neck, too...
I sold it because I needed a 5er, I had enough basses (two others) and the sound was doubling up on basses I already owned (a P and soon to own a Jazz)...

There's no garbage in an SX. . . They may not be name brand but they sure are brand name. They hold there own. There's no doubt that Kurt et al are making a killing. I buy their bodies and necks and build from the platform on up. Needless to say I put a lot more money into the SX components than I ever would or could with Fenders or Squiers.

SXs allow me to play~!

no i dont mind... i'll elaborate.

i dont remember all of the models of basses that ive picked up over the years. ive played quite a handful actually, over at friends houses, and beginner packs and stuff like that. i'll play anything in a guitar store.

the action on this thing isnt where i prefer it to be, no, but i haven't tweaked it to where i want yet.

it just seems that the modern manufacturing of these things is really nice for the price. i'll never trade in my am fender for it or anything,

its just that general instrument manufacturing quality has gotten better over the years.

the neck on this thing is built like an mexi fender, but with a cool glossy tint. it has better finish on the neck than many a soundgear or peaveys that ive owned. also its not a glued neck. i dont know what the actual term is, but ive noticed alot of lower priced guitars have this glue joint right by the nut. especially on the tilt back headstock designs. the sx doesnt have that. its solid wood... lol

i bought one of those squier mudbucker teles earlier this year, and the neck felt unfinished. the sx is smooth as glass.

i dig it!

when you come to Aus..(EVERYONE will come to Aus, eventually...:D...right, Phil ;) )...you can check out my new Squier Deluxe Active V...mind you, it DID cost twice as much as your SX...but it's a great instrument, too...

Oh and bring your SX along...I MUST check it out.

It's a simple formula really:

Communism + slave labor = SX basses.

But someone has to buy them! :D

If I was poor and Chinese, I'd much rather work making SX basses than the alternative. All countries with strong economies have had sweatshops as a part of growing pains (I'm not saying SX uses sweatshops, either...that certainly isn't an accusation you make lightly), and not buying SX basses isn't going to stop the oppressive Chinese government. I think it's much better for all countries to help these emerging countries work past the sweatshop stage and help them build thriving economies.

Anyway, enough of my soapboxing. I'm not in favor of trampling on human rights, but not buying SX basses won't do anything except put poor Chinese people out of work and force them to do much worse.

If I quit buying Chinese products my house would be empty. Well, except for my MIA Fender and Ric basses. :D
