In the original spirit of this thread I’ll mention that Arnold Schnitzer had just completed building a Walnut bass for our friend Don Higdon...The tone was rich, warm, even, punchy, clear….all the things you want in a bass. Under the bow it was sweet and strong through all the registers. ... It already sounds good. When it breaks in it will be really something. When it’s 100 years old it will rival those six figure basses I played.
One test is a ppp upbow starting at the tip. This bass sounds immediately. Tone, and no mechanical noise whatsoever.I think I've tried 3 of his previous carved basses. They are all nice, but this one somehow has an older seasoned, puffy, but focused sound and plays incredibly even.
