Need advice on a 'first' bass

Well, actually a second bass - I sold my first one 21 years ago when I had to decide between university and a band. So now I've got a job, but no bass.

I want to get something which is not too expensive, but not bottom of the line either. What's condsidered to be a good, solid beginner's bass? My old one was a Yamaha, which was fine for the price (400 Canadian dollars with a hardcover case back in 1987). Will be mainly playing motown, classic rock and funk.

An amazing bass, especially for the price! Active pickups and preamp, active blend, Hipshot USA hardware. I actually used to own the bass in this thread and can vouch for the sound and playability.
