So here's the story. I had all these bum parts laying around... second hand stuff, or parts I didn't really like... and this fender style body some guy painted (badly) and then gave up on without ever finishing the job (drilling for a bridge, wiring routs, etc... So I put it all together, with the second hand parts, just for kicks.
Fitting the neck was tough... it was pretty wide at the heel, and the body pocket was pretty narrow... A lot of sanding took place to get them to fit... in the end, I found myself standing on the neck to get it all the way into the body. Never had to do that before.
And then I strung it all up... played some notes. And the tone of this thing...
It made me cry... well actually it made me angry... because of the cruel irony of this butt ugly mutt sounding so good.... of all the basses to really sing... so now I am thinking, I'd like to repaint it... but to do that, I'd need to take the neck off. The sound engineer I work with tells me to leave it alone.. that if I pull the neck off, it might change things... the guitarist tells me not to try and repaint... might change it... just deal with the ugly, bad paintjob.
Am I really taking a risk by pulling the neck off... man, can I even pull it off? When I put it on I was able to carry it around without any bolts and you'd swear it was all screwed in.
