Saw this at a pawnshop (as some of you know) for $75. Missing a string and I asked the guy if he would take a little less. He went to the computer and said how about $40? So I'm happy! I guess its missing the thing on the headstock that the strings go under (hope that's not anything major). Hope someone can point me in the right direction. Picture time!

Awesome deal. Its called a string tree BTW. Google Peavey Foundation String Tree. should get what your looking for. as far as playing without it, it shouldn't be too bad, may not wrap the tuner right and may lose tuning quicker than normal but I don't think it will hurt anything.

1) You should go back to that pawnshop and give them some more money. ;)

2) I *think* the string tree is that black piece that's on there. It looks like it's just missing a screw so somebody screwed the other one all the way down to hold it there while it's not being used. I think if you get a second screw to match the first one, you can just back that one that's there way out, add the second screw, then run the strings under it, like they're supposed to be. Could be wrong, though!

The input jack is a bit loose and wonky. What do I do about that? Whole plug seems to move around.

Tighten the nut. It's visually pretty loose, which is why it's moving so much. Get a crescent wrench, or a pair of pliers, and carefully tighten it. May need to take the back cover off and hold the jack steady so you don't twist and potentially pull off a wire.

BTW, AWESOME score! Foundations are great basses!

Any tips on holding that? When you say carefully do something on the inside, gets me a little nervous. :p holding each side with pliers doesn't seem to be doing much, just keeps spinning..

Doesn't look like you're going to be able to really get a grip on the jack from inside the control cavity. The way to do this correctly is to carefully remove the jack plate, pull it away from body without breaking the wires, hold the jack and tighten the nut. Reinstall the plate without stripping the screws.

What am I doing wrong? Did that, and I've been turning. From the start, the nut did look a little crooked. Is that the problem? It still turns though and never gets tighter.. Should I take it off and put a new nut on - will that do the trick?

I think, if you look on the back side of the jack plate, you'll see another nut. Try turning that back some so that the jack can stick a little further out through the jack plate. Then try tightening the outer nut again. It looks like maybe the threads on the end of the jack are stripped and you might just need more sticking out for the nut to have something to grab onto.

Not sure what the red thing is... a washer? Regardless, I don't think you need it. I don't remember one being on my Foundation. Could be that the nut is not the right size for the thread of the jack. If you have others to try, maybe from another jack, try it. If not, you may need to run to the hardware store!
