Am I too old to get started in this?

Been playing 2 years, started when I was 35! You can definitely do it. :)

What Instrument Did You Primarily Play Before the Bass?

Flute! I am a classically trained flutist and then started picking up other instruments in my 30s as I played in a band and certain instruments were needed. I picked up the bass because I've always loved the sound and getting to be part of the rhythm section. It's a nice change from melody all...

    Agreed on all fronts.

    All these questions about weight?

Same here with the scoliosis. It makes a difference. RE: balance, I have a Jack Casady and while I love a lot about it, man is it neck-heavy. Ugh. And it's heavy (for me). I'm only 5'1", so a giant bass makes a difference on my frame. That said, I play my JC the most, so that's my own (poor?)...

What do you Eat before gig

I sing as well, so no dairy or anything acidic if possible because that messes up my throat *and* my stomach. I do something light like a very small sandwich or a protein bar a few hours before. I really don't like much in my stomach when I play. Then I hork down a bunch of food after. lol

Bass Failure On a Gig (Poll)

I always bring two basses. Part of that is that another bandmate and I trade off bass playing, and we're both picky about which one we play. ;) But I would bring another one anyway because if something goes awry, having no bass sucks. We have so much gear anyway that what's one more thing? lol

is it crazy to have different necks and scales?

    24"????? Whoa!

is it crazy to have different necks and scales?

I have a 30" Mustang and a 34" Jack Casady (which feels bigger since the whole thing is so honking big) and I've gotten used to switching back and forth as well. I think like someone said earlier, as long as you practice on the one you'll perform with, all good.

    As a bassist I....

Don't wear long necklaces because they get in the way.

    As a bassist I....

Am still working on singing and playing at the same time. It's harder than with other kinds of guitars and the ukulele!

    As a bassist I....

Same here. I have our wedding date tattooed on my finger anyway, but I wouldn't care (and neither would my husband) if I didn't.

What is the Appeal of a Short-Scale Bass?

I'm only 5'1" and for me, the SS is all about mechanics. My wrist and shoulder don't hurt like they do if I play my 34" for a long time. I have a 3-fret reach with a SS vs. a 2-fret reach (barely) with a 34". And I think the SS ones are balanced a little better. Tone-wise, eh. I definitely need...

Worst Bass Related Purchase of 2018?

All the hate for the cobalts! I like mine on my Casady. My worst one was the Fender short-scale stock strings. Yikes. They're awful.

    Best Sounding Bass ever

Agree. My Mustang had way more punch on a recording we did than it ever does live...
