What model Carvin is this ?

I have a B4 kit from about 2001 that looks almost identical. Mine has the same active electronics as that. It's a nice bass, but that's because I put it together ;)

    Tru-Oil question

I've never used the product before, but I don't think that's correct. I believe a sealer is meant to, well, seal the wood, which would prevent a stain from taking. The recipe I've seen most often is: 1. finish sand 2. stain (optional) 3. grain fill (optional) 4. sealer 5. color coats...

    Orange Hybrid build

Thanks, Barnacle. I'm an engineer, so when I first decided to build a shorty I did my research. Everybody and their mother said that you need to use short scale strings on a shorty. The engineer in me said "BS." So I fixed that problem. Truth be told, I'm not completely happy with my...

    Orange Hybrid build

Here is a song I recorded with this bass. It's an older recording, but I think the more aggressive sound of my new bass fits the tune better than my jazz copy did. I played it with a pick and had to boost the low EQ, and cut the highs and mids just a little bit. Other than that, there is only...

    Orange Hybrid build

As promised, here is a bone-dry recording (complete with hiss) of my new bass. The link should explain what's going on, but if anyone wants to know some specifics, just ask. Orange Hybrid Examples

    Paint is turning to powder!

I'm no expert, but it sounds like your primer is incompatible with your paint.

Jaygunn, Thanks for checking this out. I'm also worried a bit about issues with running the strings directly over the wood. If I run into any problems, I do have access to some Delrin plastic which I can use to cut out some ferrules to let the strings sit on. That should give a nice...

    Orange Hybrid build

Well, here we are 2 months later and this bass is getting pretty close. My wife and I just moved into a new house, so that sucked up a lot of my free time. Unfortunately, I do not have a camera, so I have only a handful of progress pics (and none of them involve any sawdust or power tools...

What <1K bass could I tune to low F#?

I understand the argument that you won't be able to hear the fundamental of such a low note. I would like to know why this matters. From a typical 4 string, the low E would produce the following frequencies: 41, 82, 123, 164, etc. It is true that many amps (and living room speakers) can't...

remove superglue drop and small spatter from bass body

If the finish does dull, use the cat to buff it out. Depending on which side of the cat you use, it's the equivalent of either 2000 grit or 10 grit. Just make sure you wear gloves, cats have sharp edges.

    Soundproofing a room

testing1two is correct. I had assumed you meant "acoustically treating." My advice won't help you actually soundproof a room, from what I've heard it's enormously expensive to keep sound from escaping a room unless it's been specially built for that purpose. Acoustic treatment is really...
